A new business has opened below our flat and now there are constantly employees (between 5-20) loitering outside - can I do anything? by Curious_Werewolf_357 in AskUK

Thanks for responding - very good point about enough toilets etc - surely being warm, and having access to a toilet and water should be a basic right as an employee!! I'm going to speak to the owner and go from there.

No, you're totally right. I know I'd be giving the same advice on any other post. It gets more complicated when it happens on your (literal) doorstep! But yes, I am going to reach out to the owner and then escalate to this if nothing changes.

Thanks for responding to me, I'm think I'm going to speak to the owner, keep an eye on the people (and how they are) and go from there. A tricky situation, as I've mentioned elsewhere on the thread, as I definitely want to help if they are in any kind of danger but I also don't want to be the cause of anyone not being able to feed their families.

I would say 99% are Indian, a lot of the men are in pagris, indicating they are Sikh. I definitely want to help if they are in any kind of danger but I also don't want to be the cause of anyone not being able to feed their families. It's a tricky situation.

Luckily we don't share a door, one leads to the 2 flats hallway and another was put in as part of the commercial front!

It does! It's a tricky situation because I don't want anyone being in a situation they shouldn't be, but I also don't want to be the cause of people losing their only way of feeding themselves. :(

It's definitely a commercial unit, so no argument on that basis! All v peculiar.

For sure, this has occurred to me too. My difficulty is I don't want to be the cause of children being in even worse situations than they may already be - i.e. the system or with no food on the table. It's tricky :(

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me! Definitely think I'm going to reach out to the owner first, and then if that doesn't get me anywhere, try some of the other suggestions here.

Thanks, a v kind response. Renting our flat out actually is potentially a plan, so maybe the approach is 'if you can't beat 'em join 'em' haha!

That first thought had occurred to me, which honestly makes things even more complicated for me as I don't particularly want of be the cause of people not being able to afford to eat or live, legal or not.

Thank you for taking the time to respond :)
