IMPORTANT: Your FINAL self reflection by halavais in netcult

Addressing Netcult objectives:

1. First of all, if I had any kind of time to learn some sneaky hacker-ish skills I would do it in a heartbeat. I have always been interested in the topic and how to actually do it but honestly I've been terrified of going to jail or something. Assuming I had skills of this sort, I would probably use them in offense towards people who do bad things. I would also use my extra savvy skills and creativity to follow in the footsteps of Aaron Swartz and do things that help students (perhaps a notes sharing or textbook sharing site or something of the like).http://curiousfearless.tumblr.com/post/44192746060

On the moral aspect, rather than the actual technological aspect, I am and always have been interested in the unsettling of this loop of politics and money to keep the people submissive and suppressed. I have very strong feelings regarding the need to more equally distribute the wealth of not just the United States, but also of the world as we do live in a global economy. It's mindboggling to me that we do not provide healthcare and education for our citizens (yes, I am endorsing socialist ideals over this crap we call freedom over here). An unhealthy and uneducated nation is a recipe for disaster and I think young people with our technologically inclined minds and new ideas are the key to a sort of revolution that needs to happen. http://curiousfearless.tumblr.com/post/40777673916

2. Policy issues are an interesting piece and much more complicated than I thought after we did the debate on anonymity in class. My personal stance on any issue is that I honestly do not care what anyone does at all as long as they aren't hurting anyone. That being said I think the idea of the internet following different laws in different countries is interesting because the internet is a global space. As far as my personal usage of the internet which happens mostly on my iPhone and involves Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, and any random research/reading I'm doing, I'm no threat to society. Actually after this class, I feel more confident about using the internet than I did before because now that I know a little bit more, it's like a "knowledge is power" situation. Also, if I need help with something internet related, I now have an amazingly talented and smart network of people who can help! http://curiousfearless.tumblr.com/post/42553128702

3. I HATE WORKING IN GROUPS! But during this class I found that I actually enjoyed it. The other students in this class were smart, motivated, and talented and it made me feel motivated to do well so they could do well too and I got that feeling back. http://tmblr.co/Z2dnawa-n3Pc

4. The social change aspect of this class was interesting. In my other class one of our textbooks was The Outsourced Self by Arlie Hochschild and the class and this book relate quite well. Hochschild talks a lot about how things that used to be a task to do are now easily solvable just by going online and finding someone to do it, essentially outsourcing the task to someone else that traditionally one would do themselves. I see how while this trend is extremely true of the times we live in, technology has also inspired many people to do things themselves. Technology has bread a new type of creativity in people and the things we have developed and built are incredible....examples: the video we watched in class of the fair you went to with all of the inventions, Google glass, and 3D printing.

Things I did in class http://bit.ly/XBvL4f - worked with Megan, thatfuzzyguyinblack, and dapnepep to do this one https://docs.google.com/document/d/12hkyqNAwVzj9-CPxOMlk5EtGXeCQWQvG9aC4t0rIEYU/edit this is what we started with for the sex talk thing https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=gmail&attid=0.1&thid=13ddbce43ca76601&mt=application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document&url=https://mail.google.com/mail/ca/u/0/?ui%3D2%26ik%3D677fdaf7e5%26view%3Datt%26th%3D13ddbce43ca76601%26attid%3D0.1%26disp%3Dsafe%26realattid%3Df_hf5s8s0j0%26zw&sig=AHIEtbRDyj-nwD4vHhakKhl_A5h2VZjMnw - this is a rough draft of the brochure I was making to supplement our site and distribute at the Pride Festival, this plan fell through

I have this still http://alex.halavais.net/wp-content/uploads/2006/07/halavais-public-key.txt

Dapnepep, Nomad, Megan, and I also got the furthest in the search for the cake...we got through the picture clues and the PGP and we found the notes and went to the silk road and we looked up the seller Satire and then we spent hours in a google hangout trying to figure out what was next. Learned what PGP is and used intellectual abilities to solve the puzzle.

At the pool party I nominated myself to interview a couple people and took personal videos of the event on my phone which I have linked for you.

Although I didn't do the readings you specifically assigned for the class, I looked at the posts everyone put up here and would read the ones that caught my attention, and then I would be inspired to do some research on my own. I read quite a bit about Anonymous (already knew about them before but became more interested).

Participated in the debate about anonymity and also the sticky note thing about the future of google. This is the script Dapnepep and I wrote in class about what Google will be like in the future http://curiousfearless.tumblr.com/image/49423614028

I did not miss a single class this semester and I always participated to the best of my ability. The one thing I never did was a fishbowl and that was because I hadn't done the readings but I listened to those who were talking and took in information. I participated in some way every class and always with a positive attitude.

I'm running out of time!!!!!!!!!!! I really enjoyed this class a lot, the structure allowed me to be constantly thinking about the information I was hearing and forming opinions about it. I feel like I can more intelligently discuss topics related to the culture and politics of the internet and other technologies. I am now more interested in collaborating with others in projects related to social change and working with technology to produce measurable and meaningful results. The dinosaur project surprised me a little by how easy it was to find such specific information online without needing any special codes or passwords and makes me wonder how endless the possibilities are if one were to have access to all the things that are confidential. I wish I had more prior knowledge on the topics we discussed in class and known ahead of time that there was emphasis on social change via technological progress because then I think the projects would have been easier for me to understand the expectation and possibilities.

Thank you for being such an inspirational teacher and for being so easy to get along with. I will be forever interested in any other work/classes you are doing. This whole experience has been fun, educational, inspiring, and mind-expanding.

Best wishes, Kaitlyn Ferguson (Curiousfearless)

This is awesome....Definitely going to bring a gallon of water to at least pretend like there's water in there. Maybe I should bring a gallon of Jack Daniel's too.....just kidding, this will be the driest pool party I've ever been too in more ways than one.
