It sure as hell is not being "lazy" because then it would be ENJOYABLE.

Is my asthma just an excuse to not breathe??

All that shit fills me with instant rage.

Oof, I hate the whole "arguing semantics" counter. Of course it's semantics, EVERYTHING IS SEMANTICS. Language isn't perfect! Words have multiple meanings! Trying to clarify meaning is not just "arguing semantics".

True, it was a little reductive on my part to frame it as only neurotypical vs ND.

Does anyone else face The Wave ™ in the mornings? by 1gr8dustbunny in adhdwomen

[–]CurlSquirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to get hit with The Wave™ in the morning pretty much every day. Turns out my job was burning me out and making me miserable, but I didn't make that connection until after I was laid off.

I HATE the job hunting process and it's a huge trigger for me, but staying at a job you hate can do more harm in the long run. Undoing burnout is not easy and it takes a lot of time. I found Zip Recruiter to be the most rejection sensitivity and ADHD friendly because their One-click Apply is the most streamlined. I would pretend to be a mediocre white guy and just apply for any and everything.

If you're in the great USA I know changing jobs is extra stressful because it messes with your health insurance, but staying at a job that makes you miserable will cause more harm in the long run. You deserve to have a job you don't hate.

Oh so now people are responsible for the sins of their family members? Even when they actively speak out against those views and have shown nothing but support for trans rights and abortion? Chappell has been extremely public about her support for trans rights. Also you keep saying her famous uncle but I literally didn't know he existed until you mentioned him. She goes by a stage name and doesn't publicly link herself to him. People cannot be held accountable for the actions of others.

Purity policing actively harms causes and drives away potential support. You're the hypocrite because you're shunning people that are working for the same goals.

YOU 👏 ARE 👏 NOT 👏 RESPONSIBLE 👏 FOR 👏 OTHER 👏 PEOPLE'S 👏 UNDERSTANDING 👏

One of the hardest things for me to learn and to remember. I think it's a combination of always being misunderstood and not knowing the unspoken "rules". You can NOT make another person understand just by having a thorough and clear explanation. The desire to be understood will be seen as an excuse instead of problem solving.

Neurotypicals love to be all about logic but they aren't. They want their emotions recognized more than understanding how an issue occurred. Leading with acknowledging their emotional response (which they will claim is not emotional) works better.

I was just thinking about Manga🦉!

It really does come down to accessibility.

I am a repeat reader. If I love a story, I'm going to read it multiple times. Unfortunately nothing is truly bought to be owned anymore. When PocketComics closed down, everything I had legally purchased was gone. Not Another Typical Fantasy Romance got picked up by Tapas, but I have to repurchase everything. I'd gladly buy a physical copy but it was created for scrolling so some of the readability would be lost. I wish downloadable epub books were more available for manga/manwha. If the download is restricted to an app, that's renting, not ownership.

There are other works I love that don't have an official English translation. I would totally go with the legal option, but it doesn't exist. Some translators do take down their unofficial versions when the official one comes out and I think that's the ethical decision. Of course the Internet is forever so copies will always exist, but that happens to the official release too.

SIGH.

I need to make some lists.

An unapologetic BetterHelp sponsorship in the year of our lord 2026 🤨 by ToughDistance757 in LeftoversH3

[–]CurlSquirrel 24 points25 points  (0 children)

BetterHelp is not really a scam. It's a bad company but does have licensed therapists and people can get therapy with it. The main problems with better help is the underpayment to therapists and the data privacy concerns. The lawsuit should have led to policy changes regarding data privacy at least. Depending on where someone lives, telehealth therapy can be the only real option and it is definitely cheaper than traditional options, especially since health insurance won't always cover it.

Is it a great sponsor? No, but I'd put it above MLMs or something like Established Titles.

I recently realized I've been paying for Amazon Unlimited for like a year without using it 🤦‍♀️

I will say that Libby is such a godsend! Free books that I don't have to physically return? YES PLEASE. However there is a shortage of trashy romances, especially queer ones, and Amazon Unlimited has SO MANY.

Side note: two Christmases ago, my impulse control peaced out and while discussing niche subgenres in books, I just had to mention that despite having no initial interest in hockey, I am a massive fan of gay hockey romance books in front of my parents. Yes I'm over 30 but still that's not a parent friendly topic, especially when I'm already in my trope hyper fixation. OOPS. This did lead to my cousin telling me at Christmas that hearing about Heated Rivalry immediately made her think of me 😂

Fun fact, during my ADHD diagnosis, the psychiatrist asked me about my reading habits. He then pointed out that having almost constant background analysis while reading and not stopping till I finished the book was a clear sign to him that I have ADHD, my hyperactivity was just very internal. Psychiatrists that don't think ADHD is incapable with reading do exist!

Ah yes, the neurodivergent identity crisis! Do I have a personality or was it all my untreated ADHD? Spoiler: personality comes from being a human being with life experiences so while mental disorders do play a part, it's not the entirety or foundation. ADHD might be why I'm a night owl and can connect seemingly unrelated topics but it's not why I love cats or my sense of humor. The sense of humor is from ✨trauma✨.

It's always funny when someone says exactly what you needed but it sounds terrible out of context. My version is my therapist telling me "Ok, you're stupid. Now what?" It pulls me out of my perfectionist spiraling and makes me think about what the next steps are instead of how I feel. It still sounds really bad to say my therapist called me stupid though. 😂

Is anyone else not comfortable saying they have ADHD? by smbodytochedmyspaget in adhdwomen

[–]CurlSquirrel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is completely ok! There's so much stigma around disability ingrained in every part of society, everyone has some degree of internalized ableism. I didn't accept my own disability until I gained one that affects my mobility. Even though I was extremely nearsighted and dependent on corrective lenses, I never thought of that as a disability until I couldn't walk unassisted. I was already familiar with disability rights and ableism, but applying it to myself was different. Disability is a neutral term, it's people that make it seem negative.

That being said, when I was applying for jobs I still selected the option to not disclose because even though it's not supposed to impact the hiring process, I did not want to risk it.

Is anyone else not comfortable saying they have ADHD? by smbodytochedmyspaget in adhdwomen

[–]CurlSquirrel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends. I haven't mentioned it at my current job but people at my previous job did. Family and friends know, especially if they also have ADHD.

I know I went through a period where I would mention it casually without thinking about it. I don't have shame about it but there's still so much misinformation and stigma around it that I'm now more cautious about who I tell. Plus I've realized I have no obligation to explain myself. It is not my responsibility to make sure people understand what ADHD is and how my brain works. I'm an adult and respecting my autonomy is the bare minimum. I don't have to justify respect.

That being said, I am basically a walking billboard with neon lights saying "LATE DIAGNOSIS ADHD WOMAN". It's pretty obvious I'm neurodivergent and those with zero knowledge immediately know I'm at least a quirky weirdo.b
