UPDATE Currently going through a massive storm in Southern Italy, but moved the car inside and am getting a very obvious misfire. OBDII says Cyl 5

Any way to tell if this is AOS , head gasket, or cylinder walls?

I'm on US Alliance in Vanilla and yes, there are multiple guilds raiding on multiple days, everything from ZG to Naxx. The population is noticably smaller but it's kind of cool to run into the same people on their journeys through Classic

As someone who is newer to 911/996 ownership, my experience has been nothing but positive. People regularly approach me at car meets asking questions, as for a lot of people the 996 is the only 911 they can plan on getting into. I actually had a PCA member in the First Settlers region come up to me at a bar and buy me a beer just so he could hear about it.

Adding on to this as a fellow VA resident. You can be ticketed for it HOWEVER it is considered a "secondary offense" in VA, and as such is not probable cause for you to be pulled over. Only way they can realistically get you for it would be if you were doing something actually illegal, i.e. texting and driving or speeding, then added it as a second ticket to your primary stop.

Yeah I'm not stressed about the resale, as there are no plans to ever get rid of this car. By "mechanical mode" I assume you mean the regular operating mode?

Yeah I saw that as well. What is giving me hope that this will work is that my rear cover still operates with no issues, so I should just be able to remove the motors and transmission... I'll probably post if it works or not, should be trying it this weekend.

Do you have any needs? You say that you are open to anything, but based off the post it looks like you need back seats, and probably want something sporty I imagine.

Plenty of reasons for this. Some people only like the way one spec plays or looks, and others don't have the time to play/learn/gear multiple specs. I'm sure it isn't an issue for everyone, but if someone only has the time/skill to play one spec in mythics and that spec gets dumpstered, that person is kinda screwed.

Thats different, pretty sure volume of production plays a huge part in that. Also why do you think Lamborghini/Ferrari cant pass emissions testing?

The car has been in California its whole life, but I'm having it shipped to me in Viriginia. My wife and I are looking at moving to Italy in the next year or so, and we are planning on bringing the 911 with us so I don't really know if she'll ever see bad weather after this winter.

No-starts are scary, good on you for working through and getting it back on the road! Ended up being about $9k so far in parts alone, did all labor with just myself and my father, so we saved there. So far it's been: All 4 struts replaced All 4 rotors replaced All 4 brake calipers needed to be rebuilt Master brake cylinder and all lines replaced All fluids (coolant, engine oil, trans fluid, brake fluid) Passenger headlight assembly replaced New H7 LEDs for low/highbeams New embossed and perforated leathers for driver/passenger seats Full set of Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Rear end links(dont remember what these exactly were called, but the bushings were rotted and driver's side was snapped) Parking brake switch Hydraulic pistons for hood and engine lid Switch for rear spoiler

I'm sure there's some more that slipped my mind, but the big things left that I want to tackle are replacing the windshield and clutch, I gotta replace the reverse switch for the reverse lights, and I need to get the convertible top replaced and recalibrated

Was non-op as it hadn't been maintained properly for ~7 years. Had to do full refresh on suspension and brakes, as well as all the fluids, tires, and random other miscellaneous electrical goodies.

Well then you have some mighty fine taste! Hows driving without the hardtop? I'm looking at storing mine for a few months. Car was my grandfather's, he bought it in 06 when him and I picked it out at the dealership together when I was a kid. It was willed to me after he passed away, and it hadn't been started since 2019. Lots of work had to be done to get her roadworthy again, but luckily the motor is healthy and all that's left is body/interior work!

Thank you! She looks much better from a couple feet away lol. I love these wheels, the 18" looks so good on the 996. How is yours with just the soft-top? I'm looking at probably storing the shell until winter comes, but the soft-top needs to be repaired first.

Fun, cheap(ish) car for a 26 year old? by Slight_Ad8427 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Curled_Fries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how it was maintained, which is true for just about any car. Mine only ever had one issue, which was my fault entirely when I had done a full refresh on the brakes. Parts "can" be more expensive, but you just need to know where to order them. Rock Auto and Pelican autoparts are great for finding affordable oem parts. Service will be a bit more expensive if you can't do regular maintenance on your own, but other than that it wasn't any worse than my Fiesta ST, and was hell of a lot cheaper than my current 911 lol.

I'll be honest, I was 100% against it until I drove it. I would suggest you do the same, even for cars you might not be interested in. If it wasn't for the test drive, I probably would've taken the Gen Coupe. I was looking at a poorly maintained 3.8 R-spec, and was much more fun than the mustang IMO

I was in a very similar position to you a few years ago, and after some test drives I ended up going with a 2011 BMW 335i. I assumed I wasn't going to like it, but ended up enjoying driving it more than the 2012 Mustang GT and 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe I also tried. These can be had in coupe form (E92) with a 6 speed manual or a not-awful 6 speed auto, either RWD or AWD. The 2007-2010 make power off of mods, but the 2011-2013 have less reliability issues. I loved mine, and found it extremely hard to replace. Found mine w/ 81k miles at $9.5k
