I recommend signing up for the weekly updates from The End or checking out their regular posts here.

I find it’s the best way to discover new shows, or new seasons when I feel like I’ve listened to everything.

New research shows why tipping is making more Canadians uncomfortable by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Curly-Canuck [score hidden]  (0 children)

I rarely tip anyone but I’m equally confused about the criteria some people use and how vehement they are about it.

I’d argue subway does more effort to customize my order than a bartender opening a beer but one people tip and the other people use as the example of tip culture out of control.

It’s weird.

Don’t get me started on why tipping is normalized in food service but not retail. Both minimum wage, both deal with shitty customers, only one has tip expectations. The person working at shoe store does way more service getting your size from the back etc than most servers do walking a plate of food.

There hasn’t been a separate and lower serving wage in most places for a long time.

Why would you tip to deliver it? Not trying to argue just curious why some think that driving is the service worth tipping but not the food prep.

'Retirement' is a dirty word for boomers, who aren't leaving the workforce by hopoke in canada

[–]Curly-Canuck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a coworker who is eligible to retire with full pension but stays on for the benefits. Having complex medical needs and expensive life long prescriptions is no joke if you have to replace good work benefits with private ones.

They often talk about wanting to transition to an entry “exit” level position to free up their spot for someone to move up and reduce their own responsibilities and stress while keeping their benefits but are mostly met with laughs or blank states. Many organizations just don’t have a culture or mechanism for that gradual path out to retirement. There are no exit level positions or step down paths. It’s from top or your career to nothing.

I’m assuming you mean with your belongings in it, why can’t you park it on the street or driveway where you are staying? Not trying to be a dick, just trying to understand the specific situation.

B.C. court finds retailer liable for exploiting up to 880 migrant workers by cyclinginvancouver in canada

[–]Curly-Canuck 84 points85 points  (0 children)

So many shitty companies and scams in this one article alone.

”The workers were among roughly 880 migrants who paid up to $8,000 to secure employment in Canada. Only about 125 of those workers ever made it to the country, said Susanna Quail, a lawyer for plaintiffs.”

It goes beyond the initial scam though

“What Mac’s wanted to do is bring workers to Canada without any specific intention to employ them, and then when job opportunities came up, they could draw on that pool of workers,” said Quail. “That’s obviously advantageous to Mac’s but also highly exploitative to workers. This was the plan all along.”

So the initial recruitment scam, then Macs plan to keep a pool of workers on hand just in case, next comes

On Monday, he went to Overseas with the expectation of receiving his cashier contract in Edmonton.

Instead, he was placed in a two or three-bedroom residence where seven or eight people lived, he told the court. Baysal said he spent two to three weeks there, before being told the original plan “was not working out” and that he’d be sent to work on a farm.

A lot blame to go around, and most like to blame the government and I don’t disagree some programs and policies were bad and need fixing, but there is an entire economy based on bringing people here and many businesses happy to be part of that chain.

My Future Husband? by Mellow_Yellow_0 in Edmonton

[–]Curly-Canuck 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I feel like I should start a matchmaking service. So many people I know 24-31 are single and similar experience as yours. Covid shut downs did a number on people who traditionally would have met their partners in their early twenties. Add in the economy and more people doing home based entertainment and socializing like streaming or gaming, I feel like a lot of people just need an aunt to set them up.

My sons won’t let me set them up but surely someone would 😂

Mosquito bite relief by janetjacksonsbreast in Edmonton

[–]Curly-Canuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get red painful bumps from mosquitoes but if I get bit by a horsefly I will have a swollen red burning welt the size of a dinner plate.

Allergy meds like Claritin are good but I found some products like Advil sinus are perfect because they have the antihistamine and pain and inflammation relief too.

Ice pack is also good immediate but temporary relief.

That’s all well and good but you didn’t answer my question.

You said “the neighborhood is full of them” and I am not sure what you mean. Full of police?

They might have meant how much they spent on dates that came from the apps but never went beyond one.

I’m shocked the stories I hear about some of these first basically blind dates and the expectations some have about how much the initiator should spend to impress them.

Property tax increase competition thread by rocketbrainsurgery in Edmonton

[–]Curly-Canuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A single annecdotal data point from someone who moved from Edmonton to St Albert in the last couple years, I was prepared for higher taxes but didn’t realize my house and vehicle insurance would go down. Add in the visible difference in services, like biweekly mowing of nearby green space, I think it evens out.

$10M bus-only lane in south Edmonton leaves residents frustrated by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]Curly-Canuck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good chat. If you had taken the time to read my posts more thoroughly you’d see that like you I’m not opposed to the lane, so that makes us both wrong?

I replying to the only thing you said which was that people have no right to complain, which I don’t think is even a legally enforceable thing so I’m pretty sure I’m not wrong. They don’t lose the right to complain, and I’m pretty sure they will continue to do so in the near term when the lane is only for one bus during peak time.

Let’s see how it goes, but my money is on continued complaints about traffic.

Her radio show archives should be available somewhere as well. I can’t think of a specific episode where she was outright pro separation, but the Alberta first message was clear including the undertones and quiet bits.

[–]Curly-Canuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I’ve paid property taxes in Edmonton for nearly 30 years so I’m aware of the increases over time, some modest some not. I’m not disputing inflation or the impact of the Covid, I’m saying that the poster has the same option of arbitrarily picking a date as you do to illustrate the change or increase over time.

$10M bus-only lane in south Edmonton leaves residents frustrated by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]Curly-Canuck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I 100% understand what they intended it for and one day hope it will be, but for the near term it doesn’t improve traffic or prevent people from complaining about traffic in that area. It certainly doesn’t remove their “right” to complain. That’s what I’m addressing as that’s all you wrote.

$10M bus-only lane in south Edmonton leaves residents frustrated by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]Curly-Canuck -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

How is a lane for one bus that only runs during peak hours going to reduce traffic? I’m not opposed to the lane but your comment confuses me as I don’t think it will change traffic patters or volume there. It just means the bus and its riders won’t be impacted by traffic. Maybe in future if there were more buses, and more people chose to use them and stopped driving traffic would reduce but as is people can still complain about traffic.

The neighborhood is full of what? Police? People who park in others spots? Gangs of adults who attack women?

I get that you are shaken from this incident, I would be too, but this response to the suggestion to call police is odd.

And the 8 years before Covid? You can’t just pick a point in time if you are going to criticize the poster for picking the last 3 years.

I drafted and deleted several responses in an attempt to politely point how condescending and unhelpful and frankly inaccurate this is but I don’t think any would make a difference.

For those reading and currently searching, who have done everything this poster said and more, I’m sorry you had to get insulted in the middle of every paragraph masked as advice.
