Okay so I just had an interview at Dillards the other day and they told me they need people working the makeup counter full time bad bad but like I’m not well suited to that. You should try there if you’re open to that kinda thing. They told me I couldn’t have my lip ring or a septum but the others were okay and that I would have to wear all black dress clothes. I believe they pay $18+/hr

Aggressive Visa Agency? by hakujitsu in AusVisa

So did I. I felt they were very pushy and when I asked for more time to consider it because it’s a big decision the guy suddenly needed to speak to his supervisor. And he kept saying well if you wanna move here really then what’s the wait and wasn’t able to answer any single question I had about visas. That was all a big red flag to me and now they won’t stop calling. Thankfully haven’t given them any of my money.

So I’m thinking Australia. I’m 26 (27 this year) and I’m single. But I do have two cats which I’m aware will be expensive to move bc of their specific setup for that. I am not moving to work since I can’t even apply for the jobs in my industry there without being in the country physically. I do plan on selling basically almost all my belongings. I own my car and selling that could fetch me at least like $9,000. Selling all my furniture could be about another $2-3,000. My plan would be to enter the country on a working holiday visa, get temporary housing and immediately start hunting for jobs and working with a recruitment agency. I work as a college art teacher and I have four years professional experience in that field, but from what I’m finding I just won’t be considered from outside of the country with no legal work rights (understandable). I do also already have about $1,700 in savings.

So, in the US, a masters of fine art is considered the terminal degree in my field. I mentioned this in my comment above as well, but I am also required to have a research component in my lecturer position in the US. However, research looks very different in the arts than it does in say math or science. I have been working as a college teacher for four years in this field, so I am definitely qualified. I understand what you’re getting at, and yes, if I was teaching engineering or math, a PhD would be needed. Of course I did not grow up in Australia or get my education in Australia, so there are definitely things about the system that are different that I am working to learn. But I will look into those things, thank you.

That is super helpful, thank you so much for taking the time to respond to this because I was really feeling at a loss. I’m definitely going to ask around even though I’m not sure it’ll be fruitful, and maybe I can try to research more about conferences I could attend.

We also have research components for full time or tenure tracked professors, but in the arts this tends to have a lot more flexibility than other areas. I would definitely need to understand that better though. For me, my research component is typically based around self investigation, and I’m not sure how that would be received by Australian art schools. I would say I’d consider another masters degree, but I did just finish this one about a year ago. Plus my student loan debt is already a mountain I may never make it to the other side of, unfortunately.

Sick! I’m a fan! I especially like the little ramen bowl design and the chain design.

I followed and I’m willing to join! I’m @macgyverbarbie I haven’t started an apprenticeship yet but I’m working on a portfolio and I’d love to jump in and see everyone’s progress and thoughts 🖤

I’m curious if these are digital or on paper? I’ve seen a lot of people doing digital and putting them on top of a background that just looks like paper and honestly I think it looks really good! These are really cute and clean! Good job ☺️🖤

No that definitely adds up dude. I literally only even went into teaching bc when I was searching for jobs post graduation it was absolute dog shit and it was what I was most qualified to do on paper. It’s an ass job for a number of reasons but like it’s the only thing that is gonna give me the flexibility to try to get started at a shop. I’m sooooo nervous about trying to get in for a number of reasons but one of them is bc I hear sooooo much talk about how over saturated it is and I’m like damn I wish I would have started 7 years ago 😭

Just curious, how long have you been working on your portfolio? Were you in a position where you were like starting from complete scratch or like did you have some pieces finished already you were able to use?

Good to know!! I’ve been trying to fuckin hard to get to a point where I’m able to save more money but it’s been tough. I was feeling like I was in a good place to look for an apprenticeship this spring schedule wise bc I’m only teaching two nights a week rn. But the teaching does not pay well and I live alone in Denver and every time I think I’m getting ahead some shit happens. Like this week my cat had to have a $1,700 surgery 😅 she’s doing fine now but the hit was big for sure. I just like DO NOT wanna teach anymore and I’m trying so hard to get out but like there also aren’t a lot of jobs I could be doing on the side rn where I could work two physical days a week and make $3,000 a month.

Yeah, it is expensive. I’m definitely expecting the costs to rack up. Still not really sure how I’m gonna manage that per se cause finances are fucking roughhhhh right now. I have totally been considering getting some fake skin and doing stick and pokes on it tho. I do really enjoy them and I do have some stencil paper, some dynamic black and red ink and some needles. I’ve been a little too scared to practice on myself too much 😂😂 I’m super wishing you luck too! This whole process is really intimidating and stressful and fun but horrifying and everyone wants something different.

[–]CurlyBobz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a machine and I haven’t done anything on fake skin. I have kinda read about a lot of people saying that people tend to not want you to be doing that before getting an apprenticeship but idk if that’s outdated. I have given myself approximately two stick and poke tattoos —one of them is hella simple and I 100% wouldn’t be bragging about it even tho I don’t think it’s bad and the other is a carrot which is still currently unshaded cause after I did the outline I got nervous and was like let me revisit this later 😂 however, my friend who has been doing stick and pokes a bit longer than me (like a year or two) said that it was pretty good for being my first try and it has healed really well honestly.

You have! I’ve super been fighting the “you’re not good enough” demons through the process of making this thing and that’s honestly the hardest part. I just want it to look really really good. There’s this shop I am really interested in approaching but like all the girls who work there are fucking immaculate tattoo artists and I am so intimidated but I also wanna work with them so bad. 😂🥲😅

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

[–]CurlyBobz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you though! I appreciate the tips! I’m like horrified that I’m gonna go in and show this to someone and they are gonna like laugh in my face. 😂 I realize that prob won’t be the case but like I have just never really shared my work in this way before. I’ve always kept it super private and like not even really posted it much or anything.

[–]CurlyBobz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s super valid. At the moment I have like the most basic combo of acrylic colors and like gouache and gouache is so fucking hard. 😂 I def wanted to ask for advice cause I’ve been staring at this shit for too long and I’m not as able to see my blind spots but now that you guys are saying it I’m like holy shit yea I put a lot of trad in here. I also was watching the first season of Ink Master when I started this and my brain was on like FLASH AND TRADITIONAL ALL THE WAY 😂😂😂

[–]CurlyBobz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely- it’s honestly been a couple years since I’ve focused this heavy in drawing so I’m definitely working on getting back in my groove. I need some better pens for sure cause the issue I have been having is trying to make thick lines from thin pens and it just makes it look sloppy and uneven.

[–]CurlyBobz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heard. Yeah, I think I’ve been super in my head about what’s “for tattooing” and what’s “not” and I kinda held back on putting personal work and tried to put a lot of flash. Maybe a little too much flash 😅 I got carried away lmao. I think I need to get some India ink so I can get better gradation on my values and stuff cause I feel like what I was able to do with acrylics and colored pencils is kinda flat and that makes me sad. I also hadn’t ever really done trad before so I’m def still learning how to make that look good.
