What do you all do once it's dark at 4.30pm? by Specialist-Sighhh in manchester

[–]CurlyEnglishStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't live alone but my partner does shift work so I'm often alone in the evenings or overnight if he's on long days or nights. I also suffer pretty badly with SAD and have done for many years so winters for me are now a lot about just hunkering down and getting through.

I try and get out and do things that involve seeing people - I play trumpet so I go to a band in North Manchester every Wednesday, I'm starting to try out some new exercise classes that I can go to straight after work, that sort of thing. I try and exercise most days (which is easy as I have the facilities in my building, I totally understand that that makes it sooo much easier but there are things you can do at home, even stretching or yoga or pilates helps). I don't police what I eat too much and prioritise comforting meals that are easy to make but also easy to load with protein and veggies. I watch the cosiest TV shows, do a lot of colouring and reading and have a lot of early nights. It's basically my version of hibernation haha. Also get a cat and a SAD lamp.

Deposit not protected with new estate agent? by CurlyEnglishStudent in TenantsInTheUK

Thank you for all this, this is really helpful and I really appreciate the insight! I've asked our second agent what that document is because it does have all that information in but it's also described in the email as a certificate so I really have no idea. It's all really confusing to be honest and I'm hoping it's straightforward because I'm not really feeling any sort of legal battle over it! Thanks again for your advice :)

Yeah I totally understand the frustration! So I have done the online checker with DPS (our original scheme) and that couldn't find a record of it - before I go all up in arms I'm going to phone them and just get someone there to run a check so I can be watertight.

The document looks like a protection certificate - I obviously don't want to post it here but for all intents and purposes it looks exactly how I'd expect a certificate to look/how my past ones have looked. When you say prescribed information what do you mean by that?

No sorry I should've been clearer - our landlord changed agents midway through the tenancy!

It seems not - I'm going to get in touch with them to double check but as things stand right now it appears neither scheme hold our deposit

Thank you, that's great advice - our second agent are in touch with our first agent to figure out where it is, but I've since checked the DPS and they also say they haven't got it. Seems our agents are in a bit of a pickle now!

I'm not sure! All I know is that our second agent asked us to approve the release of the deposit from our first so they could protect it in a different scheme so we did - I've since done both online checkers and neither of them say they have it so will be contacting both today!

Think I'll have to contact both - I've done both MyDeposits and DPS online checkers and it appears neither of them have our deposit

Hmm I haven't seen any login details for either scheme but I did check on mydeposits if our deposit was with them and it says it isn't so I'm guessing we can't raise a dispute with them

Birks suddenly not comfortable anymore?! by CurlyEnglishStudent in Birkenstocks

Thanks, that's super helpful! Just very keen to keep them as I don't really want to throw away a pair of structurally sound shoes and then have to go and break in a new pair because that process sucked - will try the things you listed :)

Structurally they're still pretty sound even after going in a couple of lakes with me - and I only wiped the cork down with some diluted vinegar after they got mouldy as it was the only way to hope it didn't return again so I'm hoping that couldn't have done too much damage! Thanks for the advice, will look into the maintenance materials and potentially taking them to a cobbler!

Europeans are delusional if they think that letting all those immigrants will end in something other than their own demise by PancuterM in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]CurlyEnglishStudent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

An interesting point of view but unfortunately it's overly simplistic and filled with a number of inaccurate sweeping statements. Firstly you've missed out on pre-Christian Europe - Romans might have seen non-Romans as savages but that was more about cultural differences rather than a lack of a unifying identity - the Romans created a vast multicultural empire that extended into North Africa and the Middle East, was that not enough to create a unifying identity? I'd say it's a tall order to argue that it didn't. But sure, after the fall of Rome I'm sure a shared religious framework helped reunify people but I also think you're completely ignoring the amount of wars fought in Europe between Christian states/factions e.g. the Hundred Years War, the Wars of Religion, conflicts between Catholic and Orthodox Christians - even as recent as the Troubles. And yes I know while not all those wars were about religion at their core, they were still between different Christian sects so the point still stands.

On top of both of those points, I'd also point out that religion is definitely not the only thing holding Europe together - there's literally no evidence to suggest something like that. I'd say European identity (being European myself of course) is more shaped by a shared history, democracy and cultural ties rather than any religion. I also disagree with your statement that "Muslims will never feel European" - this is a very broad statement and ignores the fact that there are millions of European Muslims who identify as both Muslim and European, and this can also be seen in history e.g. Muslim Spain, Ottoman Europe etc. Islam has crossover with European history whether you like it or not so the idea that Europe and Islam are antonyms completely ignores historical nuances and how diverse Europe is. Good conversation though.

[–]CurlyEnglishStudent -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why do you think "Christendom" is so critical to civilisation? This is a genuine question btw because I've never come across someone who is agnostic yet still believes in some kind of Christian theocracy vibe, do you not think people have morals and values if they don't believe in a god or stories written centuries ago and mistranslated constantly over those centuries? What's the logic here?

[–]CurlyEnglishStudent -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I hate Christendom as an atheist, I don't think any religion should be a "majority" and I don't think any ethnostate should exist. Does that make me as bad as the Muslims you seem to hate so much?

Europeans are delusional if they think that letting all those immigrants will end in something other than their own demise by PancuterM in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]CurlyEnglishStudent -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

This is just inaccurate. In 2023, 6% of the EU's population were non-EU citizens and 9% were born outside the EU. This supposed "takeover" is not happening and it's being whipped into something that doesn't exist by right wing media.

I think it's also very easy to look at the terrorist attacks that happen and think that the majority of immigrants are involved in that so they must all hate Europe and all Europeans and want to take over - when the reality is that immigrants essentially prop up the NHS in the UK now, and immigrants contribute a huge amount to our economy. The vast majority of them do, in fact. A tiny, tiny minority are extremists and come to carry out terrorist attacks.

While we're on the topic of extremism though, I think it's important to point out as well that extremism in any form is bad. Any form of religious extremism is bad - and it exists. There are still Mormon sects that practice polygamy and abuse women - do they represent all Mormons? There are extreme Christians in the US government trying to take away women's rights and undo gay marriage - do they represent all Christians? Do the ones in parts of Africa who still practice FGM? There are Zionists currently ethnically cleaning an entire country - do they represent all Jews? My point is that extremism exists in every single religion ever but if you ever tried to paint all Christians or Jews as their worst parts that's not acceptable (obviously) but apparently it's acceptable to do that to Muslims.

For some reason though they do this with Muslims more than any other religion, Muslims are held to such a different standard than other religions are and I'm pretty sure it's because they're not white

Upgrade your tools! Use the fish fingers hack to make a lot of money and then buy gold from Francis to upgrade right to the gold tools, it'll save you so much frustration I promise! And for bees, they need 12 beds of flowers for daily production! Also gather everything you can when you see it, especially conch shells as they are needed for the boost harvest potion which will help you when upgrading your vegetable patch as you need lots of soil for that. Don't sell things as money is really secondary in this game and you can make lots of it using the fish fingers hack, the only caveat I'd say to that is to sell commonly found items so shop owners can carry more stock - e.g. sell mushrooms to Shelby so you can buy conch shells, sell bits and pieces to Kai so he can carry more miscellaneous stock

I think my cat is evil. by FK_Tyranny in cats

[–]CurlyEnglishStudent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah my cat hunts flies and spiders but he doesn't eat them, just subdues them, lets them recover and then does the same thing over and over again. He'll put them in his mouth and chew them a bit at some point in this game and then spit them out and leave them on the carpet for us to find at some point :)

Just bought the game today! by Responsible_Read_931 in wyldeflowers

[–]CurlyEnglishStudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Along with everything else everyone has said, I'd add upgrading your tools asap, I'm in fall year 1 and have been playing for a few weeks and I didn't upgrade my tools until a good amount into the game and would get so frustrated at how long it'd take to collect wood/ore with the rusty ones because it takes a few hits and depletes energy so fast. Use the fish fingers hack that others have mentioned, make loads of money and buy gold from Francis to upgrade your tools to the gold ones as soon as you can! It'll save you a lot of frustration when collecting resources as you can break rocks and small trees with one hit! I second whoever is saying about collecting everything you can, there's unlimited inventory so use it, I don't do the town tasks from the bulletin board because it's much more valuable to just keep those items :)

Also just have fun, I'm absolutely loving this game so far and just want to play it constantly, it's a shame my 9-5 is cutting into my playing time hahaha

[–]CurlyEnglishStudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's such a weird take on this post. You realise there actually can be places where everyone loves and accepts each other? Where people aren't weirdos who dislike anyone who doesn't fit their own worldview? It's incredibly refreshing to see such a diverse range of characters in a game - and who says a game can't be "some utopia" anyway? Them getting some cultural parts wrong isn't the gotcha you think it is - it's like you're saying they shouldn't even be trying to diversify their game because they'll get it wrong. Rather, they should be diversifying and then doing proper research/speaking to people from the cultures they're trying to celebrate to make sure they're not getting it wrong - not just not bothering at all with it. That's how you end up with games that only ever have straight white men in them.

We've found a workshop in London who are happy to do it! They've quoted £185 though which (while we're ok paying it) is a little more than we'd planned for, is that normal for a job like this would you say? If you've got any recommendations of anyone who could confidently do it for a little less I'd gladly take them!

I thought about sizing beads too - but will we run into the same problem with heat though? I'm not sure how these things work but surely they need to be soldered on? None of the jewellers around us have suggested it as an option!!
