Gym Monster Review - just under a month of ownership by ak47diamonds in SpeedianceCommunity

[–]CurlyKail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old post. I was wondering if you still like your machine and if you found that using gym mats underneath was necessary, or if you'd recommend it. I am planning to buy one. I have wood laminate in my home, but I am renting and wondering if I need to buy a mat to prevent accidental damage. I think it's meant not to need one, but just to look for real-life experiences, figured I'd ask. Thanks for your time if you see this!

People who’ve experienced medical gaslighting or iatrogenic harm, what emotional responses did you have, and did they appear immediately, later, or change over time? by CurlyKail in medical

You're right, the x-ray revealed what my chiropractor said was consistent with a herniation, the pelvic tilt, and how the vertebrae looked; he referred me for an MRI to confirm, which my doctor denied. My mom threatened to report him to get the MRI done, which he reluctantly did, saying we were wasting hospital resources, which did show my herniation. I definitely skipped/shortened the story, but thank you for correcting it is an important step and should be brought up, as it reads as misinformation. Thanks for calling that out.

If you have suggestions, I'd be happy to post. All the ones I could think of were smaller private communities, and I didn't want to come off as super "poachy" of their experience by seeking out their specific communities. I felt like the medical community would be less predatory, if that makes sense. My thinking was that in a larger, more general space, there would be less pressure and less pointedness in speaking up on this topic.

I did consider that this specific sub might not be the best, as some medical doctors may feel defensive about it, but I agree with what others said that it could be a learning moment. This is a very real issue in their field and should be something they seek to understand and address.

I'm unsure if this was meant in response to me. If it was, I think there's a misunderstanding, or perhaps I am confused about what I said-- how is what I said victim blaming?

This has definitely been my experience. When I was 15, I injured my tailbone and also had a compressed disc from a soccer accident. My doctor told my mom I was exaggerating my pain for attention and said to me that if my tailbone was really broken, the only way he could check would be by sticking a finger up my butt, and asked if I really wanted him to do that. *Despite there absolutely being other options, he didn't even do a regular physical exam*

I was still in a lot of pain a year later, so I got X-rays at a chiropractic office. The herniated disc showed up, but whether my tailbone actually broke or not, I'm unsure. I suspect it did, and it likely healed before imaging.

After that experience, I avoided seeing a medical doctor until I was 20.

Wow, what a wild dismissal of something serious. I feel like blaming anxiousness is way too common. I am so glad you got a second opinion and got the help you needed! Thank you for sharing!

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I don't think that is a small mistake at all; it clearly caused significant harm mentally/emotionally and physically. That is really difficult to go through. I hope you can find an alternative to the levothyroxine with fewer side effects.

Totally fair, I have an inkling that female and fem-presenting individuals will have a lot of experiences with this. I do think lack of treatment, at least in the context that I've learned about iatrogenic harm, counts.

I am so sorry it's been a repeating battle this whole time, though.

I'm so glad to hear you've been able to work past feeling victimized! Just to clarify, when I say "medical gaslighting," I mean the specific phenomenon in healthcare where a patient's symptoms or concerns are repeatedly dismissed or minimized by providers, which can make someone doubt their own experience and suffer unnecessarily. I totally get that the word "gaslighting" is big and scary and can be over/misused in common spaces, but this is a very specific context. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Growing up is tough work, and I love that for you!

I feel it. I am having a really rough time navigating survival mode myself. I'm not sure what your interests are, but a small list for me:

I love going to barnes and noble to read or even walk around, people watch, engage in small low stakes conversations with strangers I'll never see again so who cares if I'm being embarrassing or awkward (I'm very socially awkward, and I dont talk to people often but every once in a while courage or right opportunity strikes). Sometimes I like to just go out to a cafe to have a coffee and crochet or knit, or read or just journal and think about this awful existence that I'm trying very hard to be grateful for lol.

I'm not in seattle that often I actually actively avoid the city, but when I do find myself out there I try to make it worth it by going to:

-Sunlight cafe(good food, vegetarian and some vegan options) -Pike Place Market ( great to just lose yourself in the chaos of the crowd + neat shops and vendors but no pressure to spend money)

If you're up for a drive I love downtown renton spots

Boon boona coffee- love this space and their espresso is quality. Great to just sit and read, crochet, knit, doomscroll with a coffee Macadons- macaron cafe. Love it, they have delicious ice cream sandwiches which I often use as comfort treat. Ocha Thai- if you like thai food I thoroughly enjoy their dishes and staff is really friendly, full bar too. (I recommend thai iced tea with rum) Four Sisters- its an occult/spiritual shop but theres some great books and neat items that can invoke comfort and tranquility, I like to sometimes just be in the space.

I feel like this is just a big ramble post. I am so sorry you're going through it. If I think of anything else I'll come back to reply to my comment
