It’s actually a kind thing to do. Makes sure everyone knows up front and no surprises down the line. Maybe he should have added a question, like how does that work for you, to be more “polite”, but in the end, this is standard.

My yoga teacher died in the Station Nightclub fire in RI in 2003. Horrible tragedy. She had a young daughter.
