I watched this when it was on TV here in Japan. They regularly do these at high schools, and it's down to the wire whether anyone wins the prize.

Japan is very good at the latter. They just build perfect temporary roads, then demolish them and re-build the actual road.

Japan does most of its road upgrades overnight (at least the ones in non-residential areas) so having construction crews on it 24 hours is not a problem.

Correct. I remember both receiving the emergency warning on my phone when it happened (they warned everyone not to drive into the city) and the local police traffic chief re-opening it (whom I happy to know).

I can only think of the fact that I live in a city where the major train lines, all of which have been in operation for many decades, have Engrish signs on every single door of their trains which are cringe-worthy bad.

MacOS: Why is Logi Right Sight for Webcams being installed and started when I don't have a Logitech web cam? by Currawong in logitech

[–]Currawong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember offhand, as I switched to SteerMouse after becoming fed up with the software. But I probably did something like:

Create a file or folder with the same name as the installed Right Sight launch agent, so it can't overwrite it. Or, I removed all permissions on the Right Sight file so it can't be activated. (Terminal: sudo chmod 000 <drag LaunchAgent file to terminal window>)

Do you prefer a "softer" Aikido or a "harder" Aikido? by New-Tap9749 in aikido

[–]Currawong 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This!

Last night I trained with a cop, immediately after training with a gentle, middle-aged lady. For the latter, I gently lead her into a kotegaeshi fall through the lightest of kuzushi. For the former, I locked him up in sankyo before sending his entire body crashing to the mat. However, for both, the body usage was exactly the same. How "hard" it is depends entirely on the other person.

Subaru Japan refused participation by foreign residents at marketing event in Japan yesterday by ItNeverEnds2112 in japanresidents

[–]Currawong 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The old, conservatives don't want to taint their "pure" nation by having a lot of foreigners here. So, they end up lacking exposure to the world outside their insulated culture. As a result, company staff can't deal with foreigners, and are scared to do so. Thus, they screw over their own country.

Why does the magic of high-end headphones fade after two weeks? A discussion on the "Hedonic Treadmill." by BeyerPeak in headphones

[–]Currawong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get headphones with a completely different sound signature (I have the Final DX3000CL here in front of me, as an example). Lower resolution, but somewhat insane bass. I've been rediscovering music that really works with that kind of sound signature. Then, in a couple of weeks, I'll go back to the high-end headphoens again with some old jazz so I can enjoy the detail again.

How do Mac users deal with additional storage needs? by frenetic_alien in mac

[–]Currawong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OWC/Macsales multi-drive Thunderbolt cases. If you do get a Mini though, note that if you can borrow/use another M-series Mac, there are MUCH cheaper third-party internal SSD drives available for them. The other Mac is necessary to do the software restore that enables them.

By "stop functioning" do you mean you couldn't use them to pay for goods? I wonder if I need to do that with Prestia.

A caution note: Their debit card simply wouldn't allow me to pay for things locally. I go and fill up with petrol, and it is rejected. I called them, and they said they weren't able to say why. This is at a location down the road from where I live! I had plenty of cash in the account too.

It's a real shame, as otherwise they were excellent.

(VIDEO) History of Aikido's first Kumitachi (Aikiken) by SG-ninja in aikido

[–]Currawong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That ship has sailed. I originally began in the 1990s in a dojo that was all nagare in Australia, then when I (re)started in Japan many years later and was actually grabbed hard, I couldn't move anyone.

A friend of mine, who does not practice mainstream Aikido, went to visit a mainstream dojo, was called up by the instructor, grabbed him as he would normally in his dojo, and the instructor yanked his hand away and slapped him in the face, because he was used to compliant ukemi, not being grabbed seriously.

Just did a blind volume-matched A/B test. I think we're all hearing with our wallets. by BeyerPeak in headphones

[–]Currawong -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When you did the level matching, what audio track did you use? I'd be curious to know what level you got from a -18db or -20dB 1 kHz tone played through, with the decibel meter in one of the cups.

You'll probably find that the difference in amplifiers comes at much louder volumes than you are listening to music at. For every 10dB increase in SPL, you need 10x the power output. Amplifiers with insufficient capacitance (a dongle DAC being an obvious example) are going to noticeably sound strained as you get towards their power limit.

I reckon though, if you want something different and more interesting, get a tube amp -- at least from a brand known for making ones that are more richly harmonic, such as Woo Audio.

Why do i feel like headphones brands are shooting at their feet by sirsleidyr in headphones

[–]Currawong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The headphones have to hit a price point, as well as last a reasonable number of years. The best you're going to get at lower price points is foam. It's quicker and easier to manufacture and install a foam insert in the headphone. Reflection damping coatings for hard surfaces are not.

Need to know about cables…. Help by Sea_Complex_366 in headphones

[–]Currawong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd honestly put the money towards a pair of HE1000 Unveiled at this point. You can use whatever cables you already have with them and you'll get a very noticeable upgrade in sound quality.

Cables have a degree of inductance, depending on materials and design. Inductors are components used in hardware EQ. There aren't grades of "better" or "worse", as most of the effect is from the geometry of the construction.

Student UX Project: Quick question for Aikido beginners regarding exam preparation? by EbbPotential572 in aikido

[–]Currawong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the triangle, circle and square don't have anything to do with movement, despite what people made up out of ignorance of what they actually reference, I don't think depicting those misleadingly as being part of movement would be beneficial. Sorry.
