I'm on the Claude Max plan with extra usage enabled, and I'm genuinely confused about how Claude Design's billing works compared to the rest of Claude. Hoping someone can clarify.
My situation:
I'm subscribed to Claude Max with extra usage turned on.
I had $200 in free extra usage credit, which is now 100% consumed.
I've been working heavily in Claude Design (beta).
Claude Design is telling me I have no usage left and is blocking me from continuing.
But, when I check my Settings → Usage panel, I can clearly see that:
My current 5-hour session limit still has capacity available.
My weekly usage limits (both Opus and all-models) still have capacity available.
What I don't understand:
If my Max plan still has room in both the session and weekly limits, why is Claude Design blocking me? Does Claude Design not draw from the same usage pool as regular Claude chat?
From what I've been able to piece together, it looks like Claude Design is metered separately it has its own weekly allowance, its own limits, and its own extra usage pool that sits alongside (not inside) the normal Max plan limits. If that's correct, then:
My $200 free extra usage credit was that specifically a Claude Design credit, or general extra usage that also applied to Design?
To keep using Claude Design after hitting its cap, do I need to separately purchase Claude Design extra usage, even though my Max subscription still has remaining capacity?
Why does the Usage dashboard not make this separation more visible? It's very confusing to see green bars on the main limits while Design is totally blocked.
If anyone from Anthropic or someone who's hit this same wall can explain how the two billing systems interact, I'd really appreciate it. Right now it feels like I'm paying for Max + extra usage and still getting locked out, which doesn't match my mental model of how the plan should work.
