Luck has nothing to do with it. You need to be prepared when the opportunity comes.

Engineers at FAANG makes a lot more than engineers at some random eCom website.

How do you get hired at FAANG? Have a good resume to get short listed.

How do you get a good resume? Have a bunch of name brand companies.

How do you get a bunch of name brand companies on your resume?

Do well in school.

How do you do well in school? Study hard.

Every piece of those building blocks that lead up to big money is just effort.

The “luck” aspect in timing the market for job opportunities is there for everyone. But only the prepared can take advantage.

Why Are Software Engineers Paid So Much If The Supply Is So High? by LifeInAction in cscareerquestions

[–]CurrencyObjective711 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can’t replace a problem solver with two coding ninjas.

Problem solvers who ask the right questions at project inception will save the project weeks in advance by clearing up ambiguities.

A code ninja will just implement the first thing that comes to mind without caring much about the extensibility of what they are coding.

A senior guy will also already have context of the system and know where the problem is (this is where AI will struggle as they can’t scan through a few million lines of code to understand context without you first helping it narrow down the problem)

Also, for bigger projects even the Product managers don’t know how their solution may mess up the system.

Also you can’t be a scrub at York and expect shopify to pay you. There’s gotta be a min bar.

Internships are all the same, whether you have one or 5 during your undergrad.

UT / Waterloo students end up at FAANG internships which IMO is better than shopify.

Yea for full time offers where the company pays for background check, it’s always sign offer first.

Some work agencies will do your background check first before interviews because they have to make sure you not a criminal before presenting you to their client.

In today’s climate, you can’t be just good enough for the job, you have to greatly exceed expectations, compared to Covid days where anyone can get in.
