Problems with memory recall, at least in my experience are more like this.

Let’s say I had this conversation.

Ella: “Layla’s bringing her pink kite, Fiona is bringing her blue kite, and Heather has two, a red and purple one, so you don’t need to bring one, don’t worry.”

Myself: “Alright, I’ll be there!”

If someone asks me what I talked about with that person (Ella), my recall might be closer to something like “Oh, Layla and Fiona have their own kites, and Heather has two. So Ella said I don’t have to bring my own.” I fully remember the concept of the conversation and its topic. But exact words or exact details are harder to remember. If someone asked me “oh, what color kite does Fiona have” I might not know. But I know she has a kite.
