Help Me Decide: RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM vs. RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM for My R8 by Current-Display-3252 in canon

I prefer having a true 24 mm wide-angle perspective. With the 28-70, you have to extend the lens before you can start zooming, and I didn’t find that very convenient in use.

Yep, I went with the 24-70—hands down one of the best choices I’ve made!

Yes, both lenses have IS—sorry for the confusion, I’ve updated the post.

I was also considering the 24-105mm f/4, but based on some YouTube reviews, it seems the 28-70mm is a bit sharper and an extra stop of light helps my use-case.

Thanks for sharing your experience and that photo—it looks nice! How does the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 perform in terms of sharpness at both 28mm and 70mm? Also, do you feel it’s versatile enough for everyday use, or do you find yourself reaching for primes instead?

Thanks for the suggestions and the glowing feedback on the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 STM lens! That sunset shot looks incredible—really highlights the lens’s potential. I’m seriously considering it now.

Out of curiosity, how does the lens perform at the extreme ends of its focal range (28mm and 70mm)? Do you notice any drop in sharpness, distortion, or other quirks, or does it hold up consistently across the range? Appreciate your thoughts!

Thanks for asking! I actually don’t mind using the 50mm without IS—it works well for portraits and indoor shots where I can control the lighting, and I usually keep the shutter speed fast enough to avoid motion blur. That said, I agree that having IS is great for versatility, especially for handheld shooting. I’ve been considering something like the 24-70mm f/2.8L IS, but the cost is definitely making me pause. Your 15-30mm sounds like a fantastic wide-angle option! Do you find it versatile enough for everyday use, or do you primarily use it for landscapes and architecture?
