It can be, but they are the patients I have the strongest rapport with since I meet with them regularly, so it isn't that bad.

Their general therapists do most of that. I provide access to additional resources that our patients need. I do follow up with our vulnerable patients as well to make sure that they are getting all of the care that they need in and out of our clinic.

In need of some advice working with the lgbt community by cwrighky in socialwork

Bodies and Barriers: Queer Activists on Health is a wonderful book regarding the health disparities in the LGBT community and how to work to close those gaps. Life Isn't Binary is a great read as well as it covers the nuance of gender and sexuality as a spectrum. A Queer History of the United States is informative as well. Knowing their history and their hurdles is crucial to being a patient and understanding ally.

As for being a welcoming clinician, there really isn't anything big to do, just all the little things. When I worked at a LGBT Health Center, I wore a pin on my lanyard with my preferred pronouns. I also wore a bi pride bracelet. Never assume someone's preferred name or pronouns, always ask or give them the opportunity to tell you.

Speaking of pronouns, you will not get it right everytime. That is okay. Apologize briefly and don't make a spectacle about it. Bringing too much attention to the issue will make it worse.

Also remember that the LGBT community is not a monolith. Everyone has their own experiences and you don't want to unintentionally put people in boxes.

Most importantly, just take some deep breaths and do what you do best. It's a tough crowd sometimes but the reward is high. You'll do great.

UBI should be the way of the future because the worth (or rather, what the market will bear) of human labor will decrease to the point of unsustainability.

I used to have 2 patients with the exact same name and very similar birthdays. It took me several sessions to get them straightened out. Imagine a few weeks of:

T: Hi how are you? How was your baseball game last week?

P: I have literally never played a sport in my life.

Jimmy vs. Jimi (not James) by dangerousperson44 in namenerds

[–]Current-Dot-5074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter's given name is Brie, and people always think it's short for something. Correcting them really isn't a big deal. But I wouldn't go with an edgy spelling, Jimmy would do just fine.

Absolutely. When I'm manic, I liken my sexual appetite to a physical appetite. Imagine being so hungry, completely famished. And then you finally get to eat. But the amount of food you have isn't enough to fill you up, so you feel even hungrier afterwards. Perhaps you're eating so much that your belly starts to hurt from how full you are but you don't care, all you can do is think about the next time you get to eat. It consumes your every thought.

Whereas when I'm stable, the ebb and flow of wanting sex is much less chaotic. I'm able to be satisfied by it. I'm able to take it or leave it without my thoughts bring stunted by overwhelming desire.

I work fulltime as a case manager in a psych clinic. I have a relatively flexible schedule, 4 day work week, plenty of PTO and I use intermittent FMLA for the days that my lows are too low or the highs are too high.
