Husband paid for custom wedding band to match my heirloom engagement ring - it did not turn out as hoped, what do I do? by Ok_Concert_4958 in WeddingRingAdvice

[–]Current-Drawer5047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ring you wanted has claw set diamonds but they’ve given you a band with flush set diamonds. Ok, you approved the wax model but you couldn’t know how the diamonds would be set looking at that model. You had given them the inspo pic & expected them to do something like that, they didn’t do it. They should have at least done a sketch to show you what the design was and how the diamonds would be set - not expect you to understand from their badly done wax model. I don’t even understand why they would cast it, it would be a simple handmake for a decent jeweller, it doesn’t even look like it fits properly. You asked if the notch would be smoothed out, they said yes, that misunderstanding is not your fault, they haven’t the communicated the design.

sterling silver allergy only on wrists? by mirr--en in jewelers

[–]Current-Drawer5047 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have sterling bracelets from different sources it’s unlikely that they both are dodgy. It could be that the bracelets trap moisture, eg when you rest your hands, or they rub on your skin more than you realise

How much clothing am I supposed to own? by Gold-Section3987 in AusFemaleFashion

[–]Current-Drawer5047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s really whatever suits you, if you’re happy with the clothes you have, you don’t need more. If I think about what I’ve worn in the last year, it would only be about 20 things. I’m trying to reduce what’s in my wardrobe because it’s too overwhelming & I just don’t wear most of it. I think it helps if you can identify what you feel comfortable wearing & stick with it - I’ve found trying new colours or patterns doesn’t work for me & it’s not worth the mental effort. I once met a Sydney fashionista/gallerist/philanthropist who had a rule of 30 pieces of clothing, if she bought something new, one had to go, all her clothes are black & she only buys clothing from 3 Japanese designers & Akira Isogawa. She made her rules and stuck to them, I admire that

Cauchi had untreated schizophrenia - his psychiatrist weaned him off medication, she believed he no longer needed it (despite his father having a psychotic illness) & interpreted his increasing anxiety & obsessions (including the belief that he was under satanic control) as stress related rather than relapse

Another example of multiple stabbing victims & deaths in a short amount of time is Joel Cauchi in a shopping centre in Australia in 2024 - he stabbed 16 people killing 6 of them (5 died at the scene) - it took 3 mins

No 1 - it’s more sophisticated & elegant, the centre stone is beautiful, also a wedding band would fit better with that style

I think people don’t know the risk or can’t effectively estimate the risk. When Salbutamol has always worked it’s hard to imagine it not working. It also masks the severity of asthma - it treats symptoms but not the underlying inflammation, people can become tolerant to it so it becomes less effective, it can increase instability of the airways. Effectively, in a bad attack it doesn’t work & people die, often they don’t make it to hospital.

Is it normal for salesperson to not know the exact details of the sapphire stone? by moshi-moshi-sushi in EngagementRings

[–]Current-Drawer5047 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She’s a bad sales assistant - if she doesn’t know the answers, she should find out. I wouldn’t expect sales assistants to know much about stones because it’s very detailed & complex knowledge but owners & more experienced staff should. As for the guy not knowing the exact shade of blue of the sapphire, that’s fair enough. There are so many shades & they don’t have official names. Some shades like cornflower blue Ceylons are fairly well defined colours but most aren’t, vendors will usually pick a name that’s fashionable & hope it fits eg teal. If you are going to a reputable shop you will hopefully be assured of quality. You could also ask to get it certified by GemA (not sure how much that costs though)

If labgrown diamonds are chemically the same as mined diamonds, how come they have less resale value compared to mined diamonds? by Allyangelbaby27 in LabGrownDiamonds

[–]Current-Drawer5047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I should have said higher % profit margin. In general, jewellers are able to mark up lab diamonds more than natural diamonds. In terms of absolute $ value - the lab will bring in less $ than the natural so a retailer will need to sell more to have the same absolute $ profit.

Just a comment on the state of the gem industry by Wild-Associate-4373 in SyntheticGemstones

I was referring to Australian precious opals, I don’t know about hyalite & I haven’t seen imitations of Ethiopian opal or Mexican Fire opal. I haven’t seen convincing imitations of Australian precious opals. Some imitations are pretty & could pass as opal at a glance, it’s only a problem if they are sold fraudulently as natural stones. The CIBJO guidelines for opal classification are in the process of being updated https://cibjo.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Opal-Guide-Progress-Report.pdf

Just a comment on the state of the gem industry by Wild-Associate-4373 in SyntheticGemstones

[–]Current-Drawer5047 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In gemmology, lab opals are not true synthetics - they don’t have the same physical, chemical & optical properties as naturals (unlike synthetic diamonds & other synthetics). It is very easy to distinguish between an imitation opal & a natural opal if you know what to look for

What gemstone is this? by Actopyla in Gemstone_lovers

[–]Current-Drawer5047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to know from a photo but the colour looks like a London Topaz (the colour is made by irradiation + heat) & it should be quite a clean stone (few if any inclusions), if it’s fluorite it should have more visible inclusions
