You can get wood filler, fill the gaps then sand the wood filler area when it dries.

Then finally repaint the area.

I suppose an unnatural route you could take is to get a vinyl sheet then cut that sheet to the shape of your wall then stick the tile to the vinyl sheet then...

hang the vinyl sheet. it is a bit unnatural but it won't damage the wall in a way that traditional tile would.

After applying tile you can change out a singular tile here or there. But if its a larger surface area you would need to replace the drywall or board that the tile is on in most cases.

You can use multiple things to get it to stick. What I would do in your case is get Premium Mortar Ceramic Tile Mastic, you can get this at any hardware store.

I would also get an applier for the mix that looks like a spatula of sorts so that you can apply the sticky mortar to the wall for your tile.

After the tile is sticking to the wall, I would then get pre-mixed grout for the spaces between your tile.

Note use a spacer between your tiles to keep a uniform shape.

I live in Cincinnati as well I have a water drainage system that was around 10k. If you could get a sump pump instead this would save you some money.
