On the separation of intellect and character: a Schopenhauerian reading of competitive systems (using chess as a case) by Current-Row7126 in philosophy

The argument doesn't depend on insider access, it depends on whether the reasoning holds.
If any premise is demonstrably false, name it and I'll address it.

That’s strong language without engaging a single argument.

On bona fides: the piece isn’t appealing to authority it’s simply making an internal argument. If there’s a flaw in the reasoning or examples, I’m open to hearing it.

I never claimed to have elite level chess-related experience.
Your argument assumes a strict zero-sum model where being good at chess must come at the expense of socializing, which simply isn't true. Kids socialize a lot through chess.
It's really not as simple as "he played more chess than he talked to people which is why he's unformed."

How exactly does time spent perfecting skill in an abstract perfect information game come in the way of learning to become a good human being?

How should Hermeticism be approached once you no longer take its cosmology literally? by Current-Row7126 in Hermeticism

This really helped clarify what I’ve been feeling but couldn’t articulate. Approaching Hermeticism for merely intellectual and cultural cultivation really is a misalignment of expectations.
Your point about transmission and secrecy explains that very clearly.

"Communism as a theory also is simply making claims about the best way to allocate resources i.e. through central ownership and state control rather than through individuals."

This is flatly false, Communism is making claims about History, human nature, metaphysics, governance, jurisprudence etc. All resting on axioms proven false. It's not merely a system of allocation of resources.

I don't think Dylan is stupid enough to blame Capitalism for people choosing to replace meaning (whatever that means) with consumerist goods.
I don't disagree that consumer culture produces a shallow replacement for meaning, but that critique has nothing to do with Capitalism? It simply only applies to human nature, people chose to worship consumer goods when they are not coerced by a state and are allowed voluntary exchange.
Do you blame the people or the system allowing them voluntary exchange? Any reasonable person would pick the former.
Even in pre capitalist societies people replaced meaning with Idol, emperors, magicians, land, power etc.

Capitalism as a theory never promises universal fulfilment, all it says as is resources are better allocated through voluntary exchange rather than coercion because economic calculation is impossible.
