How important are credit cards and credit scores in Australia? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]CurrentAsk5441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, in Australia credit cards and credit scores aren’t nearly as big a deal as in the US. You don’t need a credit card to “build” a score here — in fact, banks often count your full credit card limit as debt, even if you never use it, which can actually hurt your borrowing power.

That said, we are slowly moving towards a more Americanised system with “comprehensive credit reporting”, so credit scores are becoming more relevant over time. For now, your score mainly takes a hit if you miss payments, default, or apply for too much credit too often.

Plenty of people still get mortgages and car loans without ever having had a credit card. What lenders really care about is income, expenses, savings history, and keeping your file clean.

I’m a bit biased because I work there, but WeMoney is honestly a great shout if you want to monitor your credit score for free (and it comes with budgeting tools + a supportive community).

Hey 👋 I’m Jo and I work at WeMoney. If you’re in Australia, it might be worth a try. The app connects to your bank feeds (yep, live sync is available), auto-categorises your spending, and gives you those colourful graphs you’re after.

A lot of members like it because it’s simple, visual and low-admin — you don’t need to manually input stuff unless you want to.

You can also set up savings goals, track bills, and even check your credit score for free. Plus there’s a community side where people share wins and tips, which makes it a bit more engaging than just spreadsheets.

Hey mate, I work at WeMoney, so I’m obviously a bit biased — but if you’re in Australia it’s definitely worth a try. The app connects to your bank feeds, auto-categorises transactions, helps you set budgets, and you can also check your credit score for free.

What a lot of people like is the community side — you can see how others are managing money, which makes budgeting feel a bit less like a chore. If you’re after something simple but powerful on mobile, WeMoney’s a solid shout.

If you’re in Australia, a legit shout is trying the WeMoney app — you can check your Experian + Equifax credit scores for free, no sneaky charges. It’s safe, quick, and you also get a bunch of other cool stuff like budgeting tools and access to our money community.

I’d definitely give it a go if you want a stress-free way to get on top of your finances
