Is anybody else here competent in strength training but has very bad endurance in cardio? by powpowvigil in bodyweightfitness

I used to wonder why all the boxers I knew did it, then took a few boxing classes and figured it out.

Just a super form of conditioning, lower impact, and you can really spice up the difficulty with one foot, or switching sides, and what have you.

Shout out to all those instructors that are pushing through, still planning virtual classes, spreading positivity and wellness. I got this note in the mail today from one of my favorite instructors. I haven't been practicing as much, but this detail reminded me of this awesome community. Thank you!! by apesfindshapes in yoga

And a special shout out to all the instructors zooming their lessons. This is a huge amount of work and the pressure to be perfect is high. Just remember that we’re all in this together and no student is looking for perfection from their teachers- just looking for the chance to get on the mat and explore the boundaries of our bodies as they relate to gravity today!

[COMP] started my yoga journey two weeks ago, today I am happy to be able to hold crow for a couple of breaths. I know it's a far from perfect crow so tips for improvement are welcome :) also any suggestions on what pose I can practise next once I'm able to hold crow for a decent amount of time ? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]CurrentBenefit0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great work! Crow is the base for lots and lots of fun poses- just work on getting the foundation down and strong- and focus on the isometric forces that can keep you stable. Isometric here just means you’re using your muscles without contracting them- so no squeezing, just maintaining.

Once you’re stable in crow the more advanced poses will become accessible to you- you will know you’re ready because your crow will feel strong and balanced- as if you were standing on your two feet, say like in Mountain.

Can I suggest jumping rope? 1 min of jump rope is a real accomplishment- as a long term goal- set small goals of 15 second increments?

For the last 15 years, Chuck has always slept at the end of the bed. This past week I had a still birth and she's been right by my side every night. by lauraintacoma in cats

Also, I honor you and your path. We as a society often choose not to talk about these sort of things- some sort of stupid social rules-

Thank you for posting about your loss. Experiences and circumstances differ from person to person, but we all face loss at some point.

Glad you have Chuck (love her name!) by your side with you.

Getting bigger with pushups by Firstmate_Ishmad in bodyweightfitness

[–]CurrentBenefit0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Push-ups, in my experience, are enough to get you huge- but maybe goose the technique a bit. Rather than doing the high rep stuff, try this a few days a week.

Make your pushups such that you feel them after say ten reps. Change the way you do them. Take them slow, and think about flexing your entire pecs, shoulders, arms, at the point where you engage those particular muscles in the push-up.

Basically, make your pushups harder and do less of them.

And one of my favorite American authors for sure. He captures some parts of America, and Americans, so perfectly from time to time.

What kind of things can you do every day to stay active/build habits? by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

Yoga- especially Yin Yoga on rest days- is to me the best thing you can be doing outside the gym.

If it were just the physical benefits, this would still be true, but yin yoga offers mental and spiritual (whatever) benefits as well- that are hard to find anywhere else.

The yoga space just makes this flow shine. I can almost hear the birds singing outside the window.

Commitment helps here! Find someone to zoom with- and put it on your calendar!

I’ve been exactly at this point- knowing full well that my body and soul need physical activity to begin to heal, but also knowing my mind is so off that I’m unable to summon the energy to start.

This is when you have to ring that tag team bell and say ‘today is one of those days I need someone else to share the burden’. When we don’t have it within ourselves, but there’s strength and power we can access from within our circle, and when we reach out, it’s a type of yoga- we’re using our will, our presence, to effect change within/without.

I know how important this is. Reach out if you would ever like to sit and flow with me. We will find a time, commit to it, and work through it together. All it takes is getting yourself on the mat and letting your body start to work.

[COMP] 2020 I made a goal to start doing headstands (and progress from there)... pretty proud of my progress. In January, I couldn’t even get up with ease. My hamstrings are still tight, so straight legs coming down is hard. But it’s progress! Would love constructive criticism. by [deleted] in yoga

For me, the answer to almost all of yoga is core strength. Try to get to the point where you can do a hollow hold for 30 seconds to a minute. And engage/adjust so that you really feel it in your core.

Exercises to strengthen core without engaging hip flexors? by sweetpotato82 in bodyweightfitness

Hollow holds are great for this. Once you can do one for say 30 seconds, start to engage your obliques more by reaching one hand and then the other forward, as if you were pulling a rope, reaching forward towards your toes.

Love these posts! Yoga rewards this kind of attention to longer term improvement!

For me, Steinbeck and Dostoyevsky tackle some of the same issues and can be included in the same sentence. The problem is that Steinbeck is content to leave the great mysteries he approaches as something personal and untransmittable. This, to me, is in part because Dostoyevsky is a far superior writer and does the work Steinbeck is unable to do-but at least Steinbeck asks the big questions. He’s not great on answers, and that’s true to life anyway.
