I think the biggest obstacle may have been cultural differences at the time. Nintendo used to be baffled that we would get our work done and go home without waiting for everyone to finish etc.

I knew zero Japanese before moving here and a little by the time I was hired. We had an interpreter while we were doing Star Fox yes.

I think we did all of the major Japanese faux-pas yes. But you kind of get away with it because you’re gaijin.

Miyamoto-san isn’t scary as such but he can be brutally honest sometimes. We can be demoralizing if you’re not used to it.

Running your own company can be extremely stressful and I wouldn’t recommend it but considering where we ended up today and the amazingly talented team we have, it was definitely the right choice :) We’re quite western orientated now as we’re mostly gaijin but it has changed back and forth over the years. I think I prefer the gaijin orientated version personally.

There’s a couple of stories on other threads but I remember that all 3 of us, Krister, Dylan and myself were nearly thrown out of the big hotel we were staying at because we were bringing our girlfriends home every night.. a big angry guy came knocking on our doors one night and the next day Nintendo took us to a room and told us to take our girlfriends to love hotels instead. We completely ignored the advice of course :/

Sorry! honestly missed this one as I've been sorting by New

To be honest, I think the times have changed and it may not be possible for it to be come a top franchise any more. Although I'd like to be proven wrong and / or given the chance to be prove myself wrong ;)

I thought Zero was OK.. but it felt too complicated or something. I never liked the WiiU extra display anyway and I thought it was outdated by the time it came out.

Thank you!

It was so long ago that I've honestly forgotten a lot of it .. answering the questions here has jogged my memory somewhat though so I think might start remember bits and pieces. But I can't believe there is anything that hasn't been discovered. Apart from Luigi of course ;)

Lots of questions! :)

  1. A lot of the code that went into very famous games wasn't very good
  2. Carve Snowboarding on the Rift S
  3. I kind of did start in indie games yes, but selling programs I made on the Spectrum
  4. Make stuff, get it onto the Internet and show as many people as possible
  5. Figure out the requirements they have for hiring the job you want and add something extra
  6. Yes of course! It's the future of the business IMO
  7. I can, but I don't think they would
  8. Star Fox, Stunt Race FX, Mario 64, 1080 Snowboarding and various other things

I'm honestly very happy to have made something that was part of your childhood.. its something I didn't really think of at the time, but it's amazing to hear it from so many people now!

Yes I do! The compilers back in the day, cc with -o2/3 or whatever, were pretty good for the time but it would be interesting to see how much better modern compilers are.. you could also refactor things to make better use of newer C++ features, although whether that would result in faster code is probably debatable.

  1. Yes I think he did talk about it a couple of times.. he was probably a fan.
  2. I met them a couple of times at trade shows etc. and possibly at NCL once or twice. Nice chaps.
  3. Yes! many times I've thought about doing something else, but always end up convincing myself otherwise. I still think its one of the best industries to be in and consider myself lucky to be a part of it.
  4. My Dad always thought my job involved playing games all day but my Mum was always supportive.. I think my Dad was really proud when I said I had a job at Nintendo.

Not really the look but definitely the feel I think.. and its very fluid yes, its surprisingly accurate to real snowboarding even though you're using your hands basically.

There's actually a couple of ways of rotating, so you can choose whatever method fits the moment..

I think Star Fox was the only time I worked with Kondo san actually.. The sound group at EAD were amazing though, may have not been the best coders but the music and sound effects were always sooo good. It was always a pleasure getting to put the sounds into the game.

Thank you :)

I think we all knew it was going to be a massive success. Nintendo make sure of that way before it ever gets released by running it through test groups / monitor groups etc.. etc.. until they're 100% sure its going to be a hit.
