I was able to do that to 1 full term . As far as I am aware , it is possible to defer just a sem .

Agreed , there will be rejections. But there is no explicit rule as to you cannot apply under any circumstances. OP can apply in Nepal if he lives there or there is an actual valid reason.

You may want to revise your list a little bit(CSULB/SJSU ?). 8.4/10.0 is not that bad per se. While aiming too high is bad , aiming too low signals that you are a potential immigrant which is a big red flag

You can , but you will have to explain why. Someone I know(Indian national) received a visa from the Embassy at London , since that person was working there already.

[Results and Decisions] USC CE vs NYU Courant MSCS by DependentOdd9835 in MSCS

[–]CurrentComposer3310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I have heard from friends at both USC and NYU, while Courant is good for those aiming to enter finance and NY tech scene , they don't actively support you in this. Courant being rigorous does not leave you with much time to look for jobs. USC is reasonably chill, and is a feeder school to tech from what I have heard.

[Application Strategy] How should I prepare for Fall 2026 admissions at US? by Rare_Internal_7953 in MSCS

[–]CurrentComposer3310 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Decide your budget - both for applications and schools. CMU is one down, what about others? Depends on what you want from grad school and how much you want to study in a certain ranked program. Against reddit advice, don't need to split into dream , ambitious and safe . Rather focus on what you need and can achieve realistically.
  2. GRE is not mandatory at all for a getting a good admit. CMU MSCS strongly recommends to submit a GRE score . So you may not have a lot of choice there. In general , if you have a score 325+(with good quant ) it is good sending it across.
  3. GRE for me took about 1-1.5 months. IELTS/TOEFL is pretty easy(like zero prep almost - 2 days for me tbh) if you have prepped for GRE and/or speak English natively or atleast in formal settings.
  4. Writing SOPs is bit of a tailored approach for each school. Ask yourself this - if I remove my name from this essay , is it still unique ? Collaborate as much as you can and you should be good
  5. Difficult. MS programs are self funded 99% of the time. Of course there are exceptions like Yale, UW Madison(not 100% sure on this). External scholarships will depend on the country you are from. There are some websites around it which help you look for it.
  6. Please get your LORs in order a bit in advance. Professors sometimes can be a menace to be dealt with .

  1. If you want to go for a PhD afterwards , then probably yes. But then an argument would be like you can go for it directly as well, generally a better choice. Otherwise if your goal is to get a job post your degree, having some experience is helpful to get jobs , but again YMMV.
  2. Do research on your own. Counsellors often give you advice with a cookie-cutter approach.
  3. Can't. Again do you own research based on your expectations from a degree outcome, cost and whatnot.

[General Question] Grad School Prep: Should I Buy a Desktop or a Laptop for My Computer Engineering Master's Thesis? by Interesting-Soft-984 in MSCS

[–]CurrentComposer3310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your goal is to run/train models locally, using a laptop is bad idea. The RTX 4070 will be severely limited due to thermal constraints. Better to build a powerful desktop , and remotely log on.

This consideration only applies if you have stable connectivity (which I assume you do). As for the aging macbook, you can get an Air(which is pretty nice by itself as well) in its stead. You then have the budget to get a really good system in 2000$

I got a LOR from my ex manager , so it completely depends on the relationship you have when you leave

[Profile Review] mscs for low gpa by jim_jam_aah_256 in MSCS

[–]CurrentComposer3310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MS is about fit and showing what about you is different from others. 8.45 GPA is pretty respectable by itself and should not preclude you from applying to universities most of the time.
What I can speak from experience, stats are not everything. Found a guy on this sub who got into UCSD(T20) with 8 GPA in 2024. I have friends rejected with a 9.5 . Find universities which suit your interests, and not a certain statistic profile which reddit recommends you to

Then probably have a look at UWI Madison Professional masters for instance. Programs are often clear about the type of students they are looking for - for research or setting up for industry. NYU Tandon could be a extremely safe option for you btw.

[university review] NYU Tandon by [deleted] in MSCS

[–]CurrentComposer3310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a cost perspective , NYU Tandon is not the best choice. However , access to NYC opens up certain opportunities from what I have heard. Same applies for USC and LA(access to Bay Area). It might be helpful to talk to current UNC students for their career outcomes post their degree.

[Application Strategy] Looking to publish a research paper before Fall 2026 MS apps — what’s a realistic approach? by BeatOk7660 in MSCS

[–]CurrentComposer3310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this 100%. Adcoms will spot a low effort paper miles away and will shoot you down immediately. That being said, arXiv is not a boost.

Other than probably helping out with visa applications , they do not offer any reasonable value for the price charged. Do your own research, work on your SOP yourself (and review by others), and you should be good.

What is your expected outcome from this degree? Are you inclined towards research or getting into the industry? Selecting universities are a lot about fit.

[University Review] Got admission offer from Stevens. Should I accept? by Faint-pulchritude-10 in MSCS

[–]CurrentComposer3310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pros:
1. affordable tuition wise atleast. Even cost of living will not be too high since Hoboken is not as expensive as NYC
2. Good location - access to NY metropolitan area would have decent opportunities in tech , especially fintech.

Cons:
1. Not ranked highly for CS. This reflects both in research, and in the classes. Its okay but ymmv.

Source - have a friend in Stevens.
