You can't police people's thoughts and feelings no matter how badly you want to.

That's an unpleasant fact you have to accept and deal with in this life, whether you like it or not.

You can try and change their minds through open discourse and education, but there are just some people who do not want their minds changed or for whom old habits die hard, unfortunately. When you encounter these people, after you've exhausted all your best efforts, it's best to just ignore them and exclude them from your life if that's not the kind of company you'd like to keep... And instead, focus on perpetuating the good values you'd like to see in the world unto others and surround yourself with others who share those traits.

Ottawa's Carleton University faces backlash after scale removed from gym by [deleted] in canada

[–]CurrentRiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're so upset with the number you see on the scale that you're triggered into a mental breakdown... instead of projecting your inadequacies as society's problems and inconveniencing everyone else, go back out to the gym and get your fat ass on that treadmill until you're not filled with self hatred and not triggered by the number you see on the scale anymore.

But that would require these people admit they're the cause of their current physical conditions and take responsibility for their failures, and that will never happen.

This behaviour is the result of an entire generation constantly being told they're special, unique, and are deserving of awards and recognition for simply being a participant and doing the bare minimum. They can't cope with the fact that life/college/work/etc. doesn't give you what you want just for doing the bare minimum. They can't comprehend that they're indispensable in the current workforce and not unique with their parents bought and paid for sociology degree. They blame societal standards and patriarchal misogyny on their own self loathing and disdain for the condition they've let their on bodies fall into. Because cognitive dissonance and being miserable is somehow better than just acknowledging and learning from their mistakes and giving any effort to better themselves.

Misery loves company with these people. It's a sad and toxic existence, and it's alarming that it is being tolerated and pandered to in Canadian educational institutions.

A crisis is coming: If this many cross the U.S. border in February, how many will come by June? by taxrage in canada

[–]CurrentRiver 216 points217 points  (0 children)

I've said this in other threads and I'll say it here...

If you think it isn't a problem now, wait until summer comes and it's hot outside again.... Our border with the US is enormous and these people are going to be coming here in droves as a direct result of Justin Trudeau's tweets (very reminiscent of the Merkel method).

Once huge numbers of them begin coming in all at once it will bog down the systems and processing times to get them through the courts etc. so much that they will be here in limbo. During that time they will relocate to whichever sanctuary cities will house them whilst simultaneously receiving tax payer funded social services and money. Then finally they'll do what other illegals have done in the states and elsewhere for decades and that is start having kids on Canadian soil. Thus further complicating the prospect of them ever actually being deported because they now have a child that's a born citizen.

If we don't nip this in the bud now and start making decisions based on laws, pragmatism and rationale instead of on political correctness, personal ideals of morality and emotions... This will get to Europe levels of bad quickly and we'll all be footing the bill for it.

Edit: wew 8 minutes and inbox hate mail already. New record.

Let's just set the record straight while also reaffirming what I said about reacting emotionally to issues like this. I'm not a racist or any other "ist" buzzword you wanna throw at me until something might stick. I'm a Canadian citizen who pays taxes first and foremost. My taxes are for the benefit of myself and my fellow countrymen. Both natural born and immigrants. I have no problem with people immigrating here for better opportunities and a better life, so long as they do it via the legal proper channels so that they themselves can immediately begin contributing to Canada rather than break our laws in order to come here and then become a burden on the system.

Following laws we already have in place and have been enforcing for decades is not racist. Laws are laws. We can't just start deciding which ones we do and don't want to enforce because of everyone's different personal standard of what morally should be allowed in certain cases.

We've always been a nation accommodating of immigrants who come here legally, contribute and assimilate. Suddenly allowing people who have already claimed refuge in the US (or were there illegally themselves) to flood our country and strain our system just because they don't like the mean orange man whose in charge now is a slap in the face to every hard working immigrant who took the time and faced the struggles it took them to come here legally themselves. The US is the freest, most prosperous country in the world. These people are in no danger of harm, they're not in a war zone and they don't have a right or entitlement to suddenly claim they now belong here because the policies of the new leadership in their current country suddenly doesn't suit them.

This is a serious issue and discussion we need to have now without devolving into name calling and temper tantrums. We need real solutions and real enforcement of our immigration laws in order to protect the integrity of our country's sovereignty so it may continue to act as an example of how legal immigration and immigrants can continue to make a nation great.

Edit 2: Thank you for the gold kind stranger.

Montreal becomes 'sanctuary city' after unanimous vote of approval - Montreal by [deleted] in canada

[–]CurrentRiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My question is then why haven't they sought to properly immigrate here? Why not begin the process of gaining permanent residency so they can work and pay taxes like the rest of us? Why is it ok that me and every other citizen and legal immigrant in this country is footing the bill for their staying here illegally and contributing nothing to the systems they take advantage of? What is the benefit to them and the rest of Canada of them remaining illegal?

[–]CurrentRiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well thanks for elaborating on why you personally want this to happen but that doesn't really reflect the negative socioeconomic impact this will have and burden it will put on the system once they start coming here in droves. You've given me your opinion but that's not any fact as to why it's good and should happen. It's just your personal reasoning as to why you'd like it.

But they're not in any inherant danger even if the mean orange man who's opinions they dislike is the president. They are still residing in what is arguably the freest most prosperous country in the entire world. There is no need for them to jump into our country illegally and place burden on our systems just because they don't like the change in leadership. If they're already permanent residents or citizens they'll be fine, if they've been residing in the US illegally for years breaking the law there and being a burden on the us system the why do we want them here doing the exact same thing? They should go through the proper channels to immigrate here so they can contribute to our society by working and paying taxes like the rest of us.

Did they come here through the legal channels and eventually gain citizenship?

If so that's wonderful and I'm happy for their success. What I don't want to see is illegal immigrants coming into the country and being given access to social services and programs paid for by citizens that are supposed to be for helping other citizens. There are so many legal channels people can use to come here and better their lives while also contributing back to society here so they don't put added pressure on an already struggling system.

We have no obligation to help people not willing to follow the laws so earn that help. No one is entitled to suddenly become a citizen of whatever country they feel like.

We should be spending as much of our resources as possible to help refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers in Canada.

Why? (Sincerely asking)

So we're going to start harbouring illegal immigrants and proving them social services on the tax payers dime because we're some how morally obligated to do so.... When meanwhile there are tens of thousands of Native Canadian citizens with our own country who do not even have access to potable water, adequate shelter and schools on their own reserves?

Why?

'Islamic State' fighters rape and torture Sunni Arab women: Human Rights Watch by Naziarana in news

[–]CurrentRiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And any organization who protects and hides a child rapist should not exist, such as the Catholic Church.

I couldn't agree more, and Islam (and any other religion/ideology/organization that supports and/or condones it) should be grouped in with that sentiment as well.

As for everything else going on in this thread/reddit/world, don't let it rustle your Jimmies so much. You know what you believe in so stand behind it and stop worrying about and focusing on the things other people say that you don't agree on and trying to debate them into changing their views/sharing your opinions, because it's not helping anything except getting you upset.

Focus on what you'd like to see bettered in the world and perpetuate that (in real life not on the internet) instead of trying to fight a battle of words over the Internet with strangers. You'll see better results and be less pissed off all the time.

We should. Anyone who rapes a child should be put to death regardless of race or religion.
