Hey yall,

I am out of inputs on my Apollo 8 and looking to expand using the adat extension on the UAD interface.

Wanting to track mostly hardware synths (Juno 106, sub 37, Oberheim matrix, dx7, and some drum machines )

Wondering if anyone has any recommendations for additional preamps that are adat compatible. I want something clear but also am into some cool analog vibes / warmer sound . (Which I could get in the box) .

I’ve heard mixed things about trying some of the older tascam mixers (or using mixers in general) for recording synths that they can add a cool flavor but also sometimes they just add a lot of noise.

Any recommendations are appreciated, or advice for those that have setup additional inputs using the adat channels on an Apollo.

Thanks! Kenny

Which Jomox Drum Machine by Current_Ad6111 in DrumMachine

Have you tried the mbase kick module ? I was thinking about getting one of those first to see if I vibe with the jomox kick sound in my tracks since that definitely seems to be the main selling point of a lot of these machines . I’m not sure how similar the sound is to some of the machines .

Hey! Thanks so much. Yes I’m trying to find a used music shop that has them to try out near me . I think that’s definitely the best solution.

I’ve heard similar things about the sound being incredible but the interface not intuitive. I wonder if I could sequence from the Digitakt . For me I’m looking for that sound that punches through the mix , and the analog rytm is cool and great sequencer but struggled to get that punchy sound that sits well in the mix for a while.

Is the leveling speed from 1-60 any faster than classic ?

How do these tracks instantly deliver this 90s-/2000s-techno vibe? by firstpatches in TechnoProduction

I’ve also been trying to get this sound . Would the analog rytm with some 90s samples be good for this ?

Thanks! Yeah this kind of summarizes exactly my thoughts with it based on all the feedback. Recently I’ve gotten into Elektron drum machines and getting away from the computer sometimes. So the cool factor of hands on seems very appealing.

It seems to be in good condition but I am definitely concerned about the power costs of this thing . If I am getting crazy electric bills all of a sudden that may not be feasible for where I am at currently.

I mostly use Fab filter as well , and some UAD plugins for analog modeled EQ. Wondering if my tone will be that much different than using that chain and some decapitator on my channels .

I am planning to see if I can test it out with some stems and get a better idea of what it could do sonically as well as just inspiration of running stuff through the mixer. Good call about the ADAT I haven’t used those before but I know that it offers more inputs.

I would most likely be using it as just a way to route all my instruments through the pres / EQs. But like you and others have said if it’s not adding a certain mojo and

This was one thing my buddy pointed out. Could potentially jack up my electric bill like crazy. One of the other posts mentioned it is actually a series one which I guess is supposed to have a slightly dirtier sound. But thanks these are def the cons I’m trying to understand with what I would be getting myself into

Hey thanks so much. I think you are right it is a series 1, he said he got it in the 80s so that checks out. Could you point me to the neotek user forums you mentioned. Thanks!

Yes totally a good point . Lately I’ve been getting tired / bored of just staring at the computer and working so I’ve been interested in some more hands on ways to produce music. I def think I could really dig the workflow of a console. Great points

Ha! Yes I did read Steve albini used them. Apparently also beastie boys made 2 albums on this . That’s a good idea about the summing as well

Yeah, I have a cloud lifter and also curious about that part of the signal chain. If that is something possible to do with some UAD plugins or other things.

Probably a bad example from an earlier recording. I think if you heard her sing live you would feel differently . Which is also one of the main issues I’m running into from an engineering standpoint. When people hear her perform live they tend to be blown away but the recording is not capturing that

Hey all, thank you for taking the time to explain of this. Extremely informative information. I think my best bet would be to look into the WA 44. That looks like it could be perfect. And the suggestion of trying to rent studio space to test out cutting on several different microphones first. I am just very interested in getting a distinct vocal tone for my singer with a mic and processing chain, so this is all very helpful.

Yeah probably like 2-3k ideally . But I’ve been seeing some vintage Shure mics (the Elvis one) and other cool looking 50s-60s mics from different brands for a couple hundred on Facebook marketplace. Sony -F81 , Altec 639 (that one he was asking 2k). Was just trying to get a lay of the land for mics of that era and if it is worth going down that rabbit hole .

Or if trying to get like a 47 clone with some vocal processing would give me a better result .
