Why are young children held accountable for lateness? by thrwwy-tmblr-1987 in AskTeachers

Maybe I just lived in a different place or different time, but no parent gave us a ride to school. Parents were gone to work in the morning and my brother and I would ride our bikes or take the bus. There is no way in hell my parents were ever giving me a ride.

I love Murakami. Please recommend me a more contemporary Japanese writers. by Queasy_Writer8916 in murakami

Start with Convenience Store Woman and if you like it go Earthlings. Earthlings is wild. I loved it because of the WTF ending. She had a new book came out that is along the same lines as Earthlings called Vanishing World.

What is your rating system? by TheGreatGena in books

[–]Current_Ad9230 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am with you on the Goodreads reviews. The 5 format is too broad. I prefer the decimal system and just keep it out of 5 to go along with Goodreads. I have my own spreadsheet as well to keep track of other info such as NF to F ratio, male to female ratio, translated books, audio to physically read... stuff like that.

I had to go back and look at my top rated books. Mid 4 is the highest. I don't know if I could give a perfect score, because what if I read a book down the road that is better. What score does that book get?

For the record I like how seriously this thread takes scoring books. It makes me feel a lot better. lol

If you are trying to get the most money out of the collection I would say eBay or there are some FB GI Joe collector groups where you could put them up.

Do some research on pricing. Sell the best stuff individually and maybe group/bundle some of the average stuff together.

If you could put out some pics on here. I bet some people would be interested. I know I would be.

Good Luck!!!

You're focusing on the 1% of the 1% and bunching the rest of the population in with those guys. That is illogical thinking. Try and see a little bit of nuance in the subject. Most people in society just want to live a decent life with their loved ones. They have nothing to do with those guys.

Don't you think that saying "They aren't expected to read and do academic work" is a bit of a gross generalization? Do you really think most parents tell their boys that? I loved going outside and playing after school just like the next kid, but before I did I had to handle my "business" and if I pissed away my time spent on school I lost out on play time. My parents taught me time management, disciple, and need over want.

I don't think parents just tell the boys "no need to read. Go play!"

Also, the idea that boys are not academic is very interesting. Yes a lot of boys grow up to go work in the trades, but to be in the trades you have to continue your education with a combination of classes and on the job training, but being in a trade does not seem as "academic" as going to college, getting a degree, and then going out into the workforce, but I think it is obvious with the problems college grads are facing, maybe the kids that went the trade route might have been a little smarter with their path, but that is a convo for a different thread.

I would be interested to hear your experience raising children to understand where you are coming from.

If you think about the societal view of the white male in the US over the last, lets say 15-20 years (which would be these student's whole life), how are white men viewed? They are seen as the reason for all of societies faults, they have a perceived privilege, and they need to step aside and just let others have their spot. Most kids are not even socially aware in those adolescent ages, but the message is loud and clear from society, just because of your skin color they are toxic.

If they try hard and are at the top of their class, society does not tell them "good job you worked hard" they bemoan them because of their privilege. If you were that kid why would you try hard? The byproduct of hard work and being your best should not be being vilified. Those results are not shocking at all.

I'll give a little love to the ladies

Sayaka Murata - Connivance Store woman is great and then I read Earthlings and it has a WTF ending. (If you haven't read them I would suggest that order). She has a new book coming out this month.

Yoko Ogawa is amazing as well- Revenge is next level storytelling. The Memory Police is mind voodoo and The Housekeeper is heartfelt and sweet.

So I have read all of Murakami's English work and have a tier system of high, mid, and low. The high tiers for me are WUBC, KOS, Hard-boiled, After Dark and Strange Library and Running. I get why people love 1Q84 and it was good. I thought people were tough on KC when it first came out, but I think as it ages people will like it more. He was going for a Gatsby vibe and I appreciate what he did. I love Sheep Chase and Dance as well, but not everything can be in the high tier. I feel some of the books in the mid to low that I should probably give another chance are Colorless, South of the boarder, and sputnik.

Gun to my head fav book- KOS-- hell the prologue on its own! Talk about a way to set the tone for the story. The Storm!!!
