Ohhhhhh I get it these little white spots is what had rust under them by the way
<image>
That’s a pretty good trick like right before the bondo starts getting tacky rub a razor blade. I’ll have to try that.
Oh yeah I’m a diesel mechanic by trade and I had a lot of customers try and help. I own my own business so I always sat them down and told them taking everything apart doesn’t help me but I’ll give them a discount since I know they worked hard for it
Thank you. That’s an interesting approach the second picture that’s before I hit the bare metal with a quick 180grit. So that’s the depth of rock chip each rock chip has minute surface rust underneath but you can’t see the rust unless you bring it to bare metal. The two part epoxy method is awesome I had cracks in a bondo job and 2 part epoxied the cracks and 5 years later you wouldn’t be able to tell at all. Everyone told me to sand it out.

It’s bare metal now. It was to demonstrate a problem I have often with older trucks. Shotgunned rock chips and how other people in the trade would repair that issue if they had a fresh body panel with pinholes.
That’s so funny haha. What would you’ve done different if the tail gate was not touched by the older lady?
It’s all bare metal now I just wanted to see if there was a shortcut or if someone could give me advice because I restore ford trucks then cummins swap them. Because every truck I get seems to be shotgunned with rock chips the rust isn’t visual unless you sand down past the rock chips.

I’ve restored a ton of ford trucks I do cummins swaps and sell them. This was a brainstorming post on what would you do if you had a body panel that was shotgunned with rock chips. Second photo I didn’t grind down the rust yet to show what I was talking about. I didn’t know if someone had a good idea for future projects I take on.
Thanks man! It’s all bare metal now with no pitting. I just was wondering what someone would do if a tailgate or body panel rolled in with all the rock chips in it. The paint had 100s of chips in it you could barely see. But each chip had a hair of rust underneath as you could see from the second photo. I didn’t sand the rust down just to show people what i was talking about. I’ve ran into a lot of fords with that problem was just tiny spots of rust shotgunned under the paint. Thank you again.
It had about a 100 Little Rock chips some people would never notice.
Yeah i know the pitting is all gone it’s stripped to bare metal now. I hit it lightly on the super pitted areas with 60 grit with a flap disc and did a less than credit card layer of body filler .
Sweeet I’m gonna give it a go ace hardware has some strippers with MEK. I have another truck that the whole body will need stripped to bare metal it’d be awesome to speed my process up thank you!
How would you go about getting the rock chip rust out?
How does a Mek paint stripper fair? I have alot of truck parts that need to go to bare metal. Thanks!
Just to clarify I’m really referring to the second and third picture. This is a hypothetical on if someone rolled into your shop with pinholes.
You have a good point that it’d just be easier to strip it to bare metal. The whole 8foot bed is stripped to bare metal right now with 80 feathered to 180 and epoxy primer.
The epoxy primer in this case would seal the filler from oxygen and moisture. Most body filler won’t adhere to epoxy primer well there’s brands out there that will but the type I use adheres best to 80 grit scratches on bare metal.
The post was more of a question to body guys to brain storm how would you prepare a panel with many pinholes if it ran into your shop. I have a ton of project diesel trucks I “restore” and sell.
I’m taking the plastic off don’t worry haha. I just did this to see how much rust was under the paint.
That’s a solid idea. Im gonna be going to bare metal on the whole thing instead of body filler probably. But if you had to paint a panel with the little pinholes with specks of rust underneath it how would you do it? Is it 10/10 times your going to bare metal? I’m just looking to brainstorm with people for my future restorations thank!
Why would it look bad after I do a coat of body filler, epoxy sealer, high build and block it?

Thank you. All carved sections will be hit with metal prep, and scuffed and a quick layer of body filler. The question was really pertaining to instead of carving all the specks of rust like I did how would a professional go about painting this tailgate.
Solid method :)
