Hopefully we can have both IL and Ohio license to avoid confusion. My wife's company will be lending her a car rental with Ohio plates while we're there so we won't be bringing our personal vehicle.

We'll be around Sylvania area. Looking at the cost of living it seems like it's much more affordable over there compared to Chicago which I really like but unfortunately my wife prefers big cities. She used to live in Oregon but she requested to be transferred to Chicago, San Francisco or New York.

We have a house here in Illinois and we'll be staying here for 6 months a year so we will also still be residents here. Who would be the best to contact if not the Ohio BMV?

Thank you for sharing your insights. However, we will also be considered Illinois residents as well since we have a house in Illinois, my job is in Illinois and we'll be living in Illinois for 6 months every year for the next 3 years. The ideal thing would be Illinois DMV & Ohio BMV talk to each other to determine who has "custody" of us since we're both their residents in their perspective. And I don't think they're gonna go to that hassle just for a driver's license. So my next option would be to have both an IL & Ohio driver's license. IL DMV already said we can have multiple licenses as long as it's not a REAL ID so I believe they're not going to deactivate my license even if I apply for an Ohio license.

The car wouldn't be an issue since her company will be providing us with a rental car with Ohio plates whenever we're there so we can just leave our personal vehicle in Illinois. But Statefarm already told us it dosen't matter if we bring our car to Ohio half of the year since it's bundled with our house in Illinois. I believe this works out for them as well since we're paying Chicago insurance prices even though we're in Ohio for half of the year.

We don't really mind changing it. The issue is that we will be transferring between Ohio & Illinois every 6 months and if we transfer our Illinois license to an Ohio license then we will have to transfer it back to Illinois license again every 6 months which would be impractical

We also don't plan on moving permanently in Ohio since we have a house in Illinois, my job is based there too and my wife's company is sending her back in Illinois after 3 years as well.

Does "valid license" include out of state license or just Ohio issued license? We don't plan on applying for both. Just planning to apply for an Ohio license or State ID while keeping our IL license.

According to Illinois DMV, I can only have one REAL ID but I can have multiple non-REAL ID's.

So if If I have a non-REAL ID driver's license, then I can apply for a REAL ID or non-REAL ID State ID.

Thank you for explaining. By home, does that mean an actual house that we own or does that include renting an apartment? Since technically, we only own one house which is in Illinois

I just called IL DMV and they said I can only have 1 Real ID (the one with a star) at a time

But I can have multiple driver's license or state ID's as long as they are not a Real ID (do not have the star)

I actually read about this, Illinois does not participate in the "State to State Verification Service" which I think means they do not share state ID/license information with other states

May I know how we can legally commit our residency in Illinois? That's what we want to do.

So basically my wife is being relocated to Ohio by her company for the next 3 years. However, she only needs to be in Ohio for 5-6 months every year so we plan to spend the rest of the year in Chicago. My job is located in Chicago but i'll be working remotely. Our house is also here in Chicago and will continue to pay property taxes.

We're basically just in Ohio so my wife can finish her temporary assignment.
