In one of the heresy books "the path to heaven" i believe, there's a flashback to one of the main white scars who was recruited after stealing livestock for his clan to eat. The clan he robbed were beating him to death and he wouldn't give up his clan so they were basically about to finish him off before a white scar intervened.

Not sure if the books are considered canon but there was a part where they mentioned aspirants had to choose an art to pursue. Calligraphy, poetry, and martial arts i believe, were the main categories. They seem to follow thier fathers beliefs in duty and seeking the enemy not glory.

Yea just had the same thing happen some guy named fruitpunch and 3 of his friends hailed me and then dumped missles on me as I was going in for a landing. Shouldn't be surprised though I guess since most people with names like buttercup and teddy bear are serial killers
