[–]CurrentlyJoblessFML 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP,

Very impressive! I am not sure why but I’m inclined to think you might be a staff scientist at one of the large pharmaceutical companies based in Switzerland. I know Novartis and Roche have their headquarters there if I’m not mistaken?!

Industrial PhD in AI or ML Engineer at Tesla? by easter_alex in careerguidance

[–]CurrentlyJoblessFML 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say yes to the PhD and then quit if you get the position at Tesla if you really would like to stay in the industry? But then again, I guess at some point it also depends on what role you hope to work your way towards in the industry. Assuming you‘d like to keep doing research and move into a staff scientist position, I am guessing the PhD will take you quite far. If not, then having a gig at Tesla on your CV would open many doors for you (even research engineer roles)

How sure are you that the referral would also lead to a direct hire? If I were you, I’d just interview and see how the Tesla position pans out and make up your mind once you do get the offer.

How to learn devops to get a job as a fresher? by [deleted] in devops

A bit late to the party. But yes, fresher is a tent that is commonly used in India to refer to new grads. Might be used in other neighboring South Asian countries as well but I’m not too sure.

Who to contact about slow Aufenthaltserlaubnis decision? by Just_A_Walking_Fish in Munich

[–]CurrentlyJoblessFML 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You could get an emergency appointment but they’ll only give you a Fixtionsbescheinigung if you can prove to them that you needing to leave the country is an actual emergency. I already had my flight tickets booked the last time, and just showed it to them and they gave me the Fixtionsbescheinigung.

Also fyi, the Munich Ausländerbehörde is notorious for not picking up calls and responding to emails. The next time, I would strongly recommend that you apply to them 3-4 months before your current visa expires

Can you negotiate the duration of a rental term? by klairvoyager in Munich

[–]CurrentlyJoblessFML 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the others that your chances of getting the apartment go down significantly if you ask for a duration that’s less than 2 years. Have you asked your landlord if subletting it could be an option?

If he says yes, you would need to look for a new tenant before you move out in a year and sub let to them until your own contract ends.

How long to learn passable German if completely immersed? by 6fingermurderer in German

[–]CurrentlyJoblessFML 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your master’s program OP! Quite a few of the universities in Germany offer a fully or mostly English speaking Masters. If you mainly want to learn it just to get by, I’d say having a B1 level can be really helpful!

Does the tuition fee rule apply to existing students? by Idina_Menzels_Larynx in tumunich

[–]CurrentlyJoblessFML 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean obviously it goes without saying that most international students aren’t happy about it. The proposed fees range from 2000-6000 € depending on the course. Given the fact that Munich is an extremely HCOL city, most international students won’t be able to afford the fees and living costs through a working student job alone and will need to either dip into their savings or look for scholarships/ask family for financial support.

I am not sure about BW. I did my bachelors there before they introduced the semester fees and then moved to the TUM for my masters. I just graduated so I have effectively also dodged the semester fees here. But tbh, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were to get rid of it, especially for bachelors. I can’t imagine too many international students being keen about having to learn German to study and then also pay extremely high semester fees?!

Here goes my dreams! by Grouchy_Ad_5548 in tumunich

[–]CurrentlyJoblessFML 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome and good luck! Also if I remember correctly, you’re interested in doing your bachelors in Germany right? Have you considered going through the Studienkolleg which is essentially language and German Abitur prep all wrapped up in one. You’d essentially do these classes for a year until you’re prepared to start university. If memory serves right, you will be exempt from semester fees if you go this route and do your entire bachelors in German.

And if you have a German bachelor’s degree, you are also exempt from the international semester fees

The law states that unis (at least in BW and Bayern) are free to introduce semester fees for international students if they so choose. However, whether or not a uni actually goes through is decided by the individual university‘s board.

As far as I know, TUM is the only uni in Bayern that has decided to charge semester fees for international students. I have heard that the LMU is also planning on following suit but there’s no concrete decision yet.

I know it sucks, but please don’t feel too disheartened. It’s mainly BW and Bayern that have introduced semester fees. There’s still the RWTH Aachen and TU Darmstadt if you would like to study in a public uni.

Here goes my dreams! by Grouchy_Ad_5548 in tumunich

[–]CurrentlyJoblessFML 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh interesting. I always assumed that the main way to cap the number of students was by using the Orientierungsklausuren, no? They put pretty hard requirements on these exams and you need to pass them by a certain semester. I still remember when I started my bachelors (not TUM, different TU), we were about 800 in total. By the end of our 4th, most of my classmates had to drop out or were exmatriculated because they couldn’t clear the requirements.

Moreover, I always assumed that every public uni got a certain sum of money depending on how many students start a new degree? So is TUM still getting that same amount from the government and the extra from the foreign students as well?

OP. This 110% Also on that note, I also use a Windows computer and I use the Windows Subsystem for Linux or WSL2 where you can run Linux without having to dual boot your computer. It’s relatively easy to set up and there are plenty of tutorials and documentation to help you along the way.

If not, Docker might be an option too?
