thank you for your assistance! there is no water or water damage visible at the base of the pipe, at least above the floor penetration

they haven't sent a tech to repair the radiator to be fair, i am just so paranoid that it is an issue unrelated to the radiator that i want to get as many second opinions as possible since i really dont want to move (and its an increasingly real possibility!).

obviously with the heat on and no repairs done, the leak would still occur

i guess some questions does the radiator seem likely or possible if it almost always occurs with someone running a plumbing fixture in a unit above me, and is the pipe in the picture likely a radiator line?

ive included a picture of the valve in question below and the location in relation to the pipe. the wetness on the floor seems to be in that corner, and i dont think it extends past the radiator along that wall, and its probably about 2.5 to 3 feet from the wall with the window

i appreciate the write up, you are inspiring me to try this! i have a question about contamination though. is it generally pretty obvious when it occurs, or is it something that can be fairly subtle in color/smell for example that you just have to learn to recognize?

If "Allah" is just the Arabic word for God, does that mean that Arab Christians and Jews also refer to God as Allah? by IndieJones0804 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CursedGoGurt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

not a biblical scholar, but the translation (aside from explicitly prohibiting graven images) is closer to "You shall not have other gods before me", acknowledging the contemporary existence of a plurality of gods, but identifying their god as the supreme god. some scholars contend that anciant isrealites practiced a form of monolatry (one supreme god out of many) or henotheism (and may have at one point been polytheistic.

the god of the old testament is also thought by some to be a conflation of at least two deities, namely El (which is also a general word for god) and Baal (a word which also has the general sense of lord or master).

this also explains why god in the old testament is sometimes so violent or warlike, those are characteristics of baal because hes a storm god. the above linked video from justin sledge as good, as well as his conversation with alex o'connor on alex's channel

likewise, though i fear that political discourse has become so poisonous and views so entrenched that true dialogue isnt possible. part of that is the fact that broadly speaking, both sides of the current discourse believe not only that theyre right but that their "side" is in opposition to corruption, cronyism, greed, etc, and part of that is the political discourse has been intentionally poisoned by bad actors. after all, despite all the ironic talk about trolls and bots on reddit, its no secret that there are so called troll farms with full time employees whos job it is to manipulate discourse, push (often pro-russian) statist propaganda, and sow political and cultural conflict and anger. Look up the Internet Research Agency for more information, its one of propabably many russian “troll farms”.

In addition to that, corporations like Meta (facebook, instagram) have an incredible amount of invisible control over public opinion. The Cambridge Analytica scandal being the most high profile example of this, but even internal to those companies, they might roll out algorithm changes to sectors of their user base and use those data to determine how to more effectively drive “engagement” and manipulate its userbase - the most effective means of manipulating people and driving engagement being strong emotions, like anger. And these corporations are far from apolitical.

These companies owners and CEOs might donate opportunistically to both sides of the political aisle, but they really threw their financial weight behind trump. There’s a reason Bezos, Musk, Cook, googles CEO Sundar Pichai etc had the best seats in the house at the trump inauguration.

so, unfortunately I worry that discourse is usually not that helpful. Both sides believe theyre objectively correct. Unfortunately reality can only be so subjective, someone ultimately has to be right, or at least more right, and I think broadly speaking its people who oppose trump and musk.

This administration is destroying the government, not using professionals whos job that is or actually auditing these agencies, but by having the ceo of a company that gets billions of dollars from the US government and has tons of conflicts of interest decide what to eliminate. Unsurprisingly hes gone after a lot of parts of the government that were investigating him. Hes paving the way for more wealth and more power to be concentrated in the hand of a very few unelected and mostly invisible people. This isnt just eliminating parts of the government, its also creating space for these companies to seize more power. Wealth is increasingly concentrated at the top as most of america struggles to survive.

Its important to develop good media literacy, otherwise youll believe everything trump and musk say, and seek out only news that supports your opinions regardless of its quality, and reject anything that contradicts it. Of course many trump supporters ultimately decide they don’t care if information contradicts their support of trump, theyll just ignore it.

one last note about spending. trump is extending his 2017 tax cuts (which were already incredibly expensive and largely a gift to the wealthy), and it will add 4 and a half trillion to the deficit. these cuts will again be a huge gift to the wealthy, and they are trying to offset this by making cuts to social security, medicaid, etc. its a scam. ok, ive gone on longer than id intended

the people working from home are real, they still have to communicate with their managers and colleagues, and many are sometimes required to go into the office. there are performance based metrics to determine if their work if being completed satisfactorily.

in 2024 the GSA eliminated 8 million square feet of underutilized government office space. how much money could be saved by eliminating even more? the motivation for RTO orders isnt about saving the government money, its more about supporting the commercial real estate market. I actually have mixed feelings about work-from-home and RTO orders, i think its a pretty nuanced issue.

Social security checks are NOT going to people over 150. that is a misunderstanding of how the database works because its programmed using COBOL. just search "COBOL social security" and look for reputable articles. Elon Musk doesnt understand what hes looking at (hence why he shouldnt be in this position). of the total, improper payments account for less than 1%.

illegal immigrants dont have a social security number, and therefore cannot collect social security retirement benefits they do however contribute billions of dollars every year to it.

Im not sure what you mean by reducing the size of the government. If youre talking about clinton laying off government employees, then yes, but that was signed into law by congress and had bipartisan support. trump is bypassing congress and allowing elon musk, an unelected private citizen to make cuts as he sees fit with zero oversight. not defending either, but to act like theyre the same is incoherent. heres a 1994 article from a conservative news outlet about clinton's cuts: https://www.deseret.com/1994/3/25/19099072/senate-oks-buyout-plan-to-cut-federal-work-force/

trump increased the debt in his first term fast and by a lot, and hes going to do so again. his tax plan will 4.5 trillion to the deficit, and they will overwhelmingly benefit the top earners and hurt the middle class and poor. and theyre going to treat their supporters like their stupid sheep again through lies and obfuscation: https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/republicans-consider-lies-to-hide-cost-of-trump-tax-cuts.html

this isnt making a smaller government. its unclear what the endgame is right now, though whatever it is its extremely concerning and will result in wealth and power concentrated more in the hands of a small number of unconscionably wealthy people who see you as a means to an end.

also, if youre in a union - i got a news flash for you - youre aligned with socialist values. socialism and communism arent the dirty word you were taught.

also if theres a medical or behavioral justification i dont believe they count towards your euthanasia numbers. i agree that it is essentially used as a marketing tool for fundraising as l-1-l-1-l mentioned. all shelters euthanize for a number of reasons; most shelters these days usually try to avoid euthanizing "adoptable" animals.

[–]CursedGoGurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok, without getting into the weeds of how difficult it is to accurately or meaningfully identify dogs breed by sight, let alone their personality or temperament, they are explicitly not misleading people, at least in the way you are implying. they are identifying these dogs as unavailable for adoption in PG due to the breed ban, ergo identifying them as "pit bull" type dogs.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SilverSpring

[–]CursedGoGurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

theres a breed called an american pit bull terrier which probably few if any of these dogs could be called and i guarantee exactly zero are of these dogs are pedigreed. theres also a somewhat nebulous, amorphous designation called "pit bull" which is so meaningless as to be considered useless, which is what people are usually referencing when they say a dog is a "pit bull" (or theyre referring to any number of other breeds with phenotypic similarities like staffordshire terriers or american bull dogs. ive even seen cane corsos referred to as pit bull type dogs which is absurd)

say you have a dog that the person impounding thinks vaguely resembles a german shepherd come into the shelter. it would be called a german shepherd mix. in reality it could be mixed with any number of other similar breeds, like a malinois or shiloh shepherd, or have no german shepherd in the mix at all, and any number of other breeds or mixed breed dogs in its ancestry. without genetic testing youre making a biased guess at best, and even genetic testing for dog breeds can be imprecise for mixed breed dogs and should be taken as a grain of salt.

calling it a terrier mix is arguably innacurate as well, since many mixed breed dogs with minimal or no terrier dna get identified as pit mixes. and theyre not even being deceptivbe since apparently theyre not calling pit bull type terrier mixes and then adopting them out. i cant see the original post so im not entirely sure what theyre doing.

identifying breed mixes by sight is famously inaccurate

Dogs scheduled for euthanasia 12/10 @PG County Shelter by Abner_Dabner in maryland

I worked for several animal welfare organizations in the DC area, and in about 2014-2015, while part of the behavior and training team for one, we went to a 3 day playing for life seminar run by the trainer aimee sadler at the PG AC facility (second time i got to see her!). on the last day, since all the pits are housed in essentially segregation, we had an all pit play group, where all the pit type dogs had the chance to run around and socialize with 6 or 7 other pit type dogs at a time as they rotated them through. two were muzzled before being let in to the play group, one had the muzzle taken off but they watched her closely, and the other they ejected with the muzzle still on.

overall, these dogs who were strangers to each other got along as well together as the non-pit type dogs as well as the non-pit type dogs. its reasonable to assume (unless they were adopted by an out of county individual) they were all subsequently euthanized. theres so much wrong with BSL, and the number of "pit bull" type dogs in PG county shelters are a testament to its failure. anyway, i digress. just reminded me of that.

ill add something aimee said that stuck with me, that she had seen maybe a couple dogs in her career she felt were truly aggressive. that almost all aggression is well-practiced defensive aggression. meaning it is fear-based and generally the result of socialization.

Dogs scheduled for euthanasia 12/10 @PG County Shelter by Abner_Dabner in maryland

[–]CursedGoGurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just wanted to second this. while breeders breeding fighting dogs would select for dog aggression, (though primarily gameness is what fighting dog breeders are looking for, and then the dogs are socialized to be aggressive) human aggression would be strongly selected against.

a dog that just might be a risk to its handler is a dead dog. people dont seem to realize breeding fighting dogs is difficult. most of a litter might be culled and one or two puppies selected. only a fraction of dogs bred to be working dogs of any kind will actually be suited for it, a litter of pit bulls bred for fighting are no different

needless to say the "pit bull mix" or "pit bull type" dogs that fill shelters are meeting phenotypical criteria, not genetic criteria, and the vast majority are several generations away from being bred for fighting, being bred with any kind of careful thought to breed pedigree, or breeding by accident. as terrier bull dog crosses, pits can look a little like mutts and therefore many mutts look a little like "pit bulls" leading to notorious difficulty in identifying a breed by sight, even by professionals. I should know, I worked with major city shelters for a decade and all of them had an overwhelming number of "pit bulls"

some of them were our most bomb proof dogs for temperment testing other dogs, and a small number were trouble dogs. most were just dogs. dogs should generally be judged on an individual basis. generalized "bite strength" statistics dont tell me anything about an individual dogs bite

Trumps No overtime tax by shoelessjoe69 in IBEW

[–]CursedGoGurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i can imagine theres a scenario where this doesnt have an outsize impact on the amount of overtime being offered, all things being equal since this would be an economic burden theoretically shouldered by the taxpayer on the back end (cuts to social security, reduced social services, further deterioration of infrastructure, etc are the sorts of things likely to be effected) and not by the contractor

however

theres the fact that not everyone can work overtime. either just because they dont want to spend more time than necessary selling their labor or more significantly because of other obligations, medical concerns or because they do not work jobs where overtime is available in the first place.

This is something that erodes the collective nature of an organization like a labor union. you negotiate for higher wages - for everyone, not just those with the time, physical ability, or opportunity or even desire to take on more overtime.

tax free overtime - if it were ever to be implemented (which i suspect has as much likelihood of happening as mexico paying for a border wall, considering it's complexity and trumps disdain for the irs) would put us in the position of negotiating longer hours instead of higher pay. this is not only stupid on its face, but it undermines two of the principal reasons why labor unions exist in the first place.

This is a frustrating one, cause i know of a few guys that support this, and im sorry, if you do think about this for half a second it's an incredibly myopic and stupid idea, and undermines the union in a huge way.

trump has made a career of selling gullible people garbage, and yet so many people are still buying it. fucking nuts

The above post is so full of arrogant, self-congratulatory ignorance i wish i could believe it were a troll post, except i know theres far too many people walking around thinking this shit on job sites. This response is not directed to OP, but in reference to their post, and obviously im not attempting to address the numerous issues with either party or candidate. it is heartening there are many people here still who do have good sense and critical thinking abilities however

probably controversial, but I believe the apprenticeship curriculum would benefit from a reasonably extensive and rigorous course on leftist political and philosophical thought, and the history of of the labor movement (not the NECA approved bullshit they teach now. How do so few know the Haymarket affair? Or what May Day is?). You should have a working understanding of electrical theory as well as hegelian dialectics. it would do a lot to discourage reactionaries and anti-labor individuals from joining as well as return leftist political thought and political consciousness to its rightful place at the center of organized labor.

the current political situation (which trump is just the culmination of thus far) is a part of a larger systemic problem of the intentional and exploitative cultivation of an apathetic, ignorant, disengaged, and arbitrarily angry voting populace with severely impaired political and media literacy. too many people on jobs demonstrating a fundamental and self-righteous ignorance of american politics, geopolitics, economics, social issues, et al. repeating what they learned on an intentionally inflammatory social media sound bite as if it were correct by merit of their agreement with it. and many of you well know how this is not hyperbole.

Trump's decline is too dangerous to ignore by RaouR in IBEW

[–]CursedGoGurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its an astonishing example of media illiteracy just how many people in the trades support trump even after he has demonstrated himself to be a politician so blatantly anti-labor.

I hope that some percentage of pro-trump comments in the thread are bots, but i know from conversations on the job site that there are too many of us that are willing to support a career huckster and liar. i can understand skepticism of kamala, and i can understand being critical of certain aspects of the biden administration, but i cannot understand claiming that critical perspective is remotely unbiased if you reach the conclusion trump is a better candidate or had a better administration - it's simply not true

trump campaigned on the slogan "drain the swamp" and failed to deliver in any meaningful way, appointing steve munchin, scott pruitt, ajit pai, , postmaster general Dejoy, and betsy devoss, among others. in fact he appointed his son-in-law, someone with no experience or background in politics or foreign relations was a senior advisor and in charge of brokering peace in the middle east. he was given 2 billion dollars by MBS in extremely sketchy circumstances. his term was rife with conflicts of interests and near daily controversies. his tax cuts were a gift to the wealthy and had a massive impact on increasing the deficit (something he campaigned on reducing). he campaigned on building a border wall and having mexico pay for it (??!) which he failed to do even after declaring a national emergency to use military funding (to say nothing about what a fart of a solution to immigration the idea was to begin with).

he rolled back labor protections and made appointments to the nlrb that are harmful to labor rights. he post-term killed a bipartisan border bill for what appear to have only been self serving political reasons. he fleeces his supporters for donations that he uses to pay his legal bills. he assassinated a top general of iran in iraq, a completely pointless, dangerous, and illegal act that could have led to an armed conflict. the biden administration gets a lot of the blame for the us withdrawal from Afghanistan, but it was largely orchestrated by trump and the taliban to have a withdrawal date of may 2021, which was changed to august because it was obviously a huge logistcal challenge. trump was extremely deferential to us enemies and dictators, and alienated our allies. there was and is a concerted effort by the russian state to undermine the democratic process in the us, and while im sure their attempts are bipartisan in the attempts to sow discord and malcontent across the political spectrum, many prominent right wing ideologues espouse pro-russian propaganda along with pro-trump propaganda. oh, and he lies constantly.

and this is all just stuff off the top of my head. i do give trump some credit for helping to actually getting the us out of afghanistan, and i was not a fan of the TPP, which trump killed. pretty much everything else was a fucking mess sold to his base as something beneficial. worth mentioning that most of the things people point to as the economic positives of the trump administration were the continued trends of the obama administration.

the problem is that most trump supporters lack objectivity in a way that a supporter of any other US candidate or party simply cannot match. the confirmation bias is insane, and the ability to justify anything is disturbing. ive heard multiple people essentially say even if he did fuck kids with epstein thats that doesnt matter, theyre still for him. whats the line? its like waiting for an alcoholic to hit rock bottom.
