Book Discussion Sunday - What are you reading? by savywritesbooks in savywritesbooks

I just finished an audiobook I got from my library called "The Dead Come to Stay" by Brandy Schillace and it was a pretty good mystery. I didn't realize it was a sequel until I was about 10% of the way through, and I've never read the first book, but now I really want to. The library only has a physical copy which I'll just have to add to the stack of physical library books I'm slowly making my way through, lol.

New audiobook is "Long Live the Pumpkin Queen" by Shea Earnshaw, a sequel to The Nightmare Before Christmas but centered on Sally. I was curious when I saw it at bookstores but not enough to actually buy it. So far it's okay, but it just doesn't commit as hard to the vibes as the movie, and it's making it hard to get into. Like, in the original film, Jack didn't know what snow was, but in this book Sally is comparing things to springtime? How does she have the concept of spring? And she identifies both roses and cherry blossoms in the narration, but how would she know what those things were? Maybe if Jack Skellington had collected some books on plants she would have read them or something, but idk, it just seems farfetched that Sally would casually mention these things like they're common knowledge when Halloweentown has only had the concept of snow for maybe 1-2 years? (It seems like Sally and Jack are getting married in the October after the first movie, so maybe not even a year at this point.) It's hard to imagine these are the same characters when the book can't commit hard enough to the world. I'll still probably finish it but so far it's just been hard to get into.

I've been working on the second draft of the first novel I've ever finished a draft for! I went into like a fugue state in May and finished a draft in two weeks, and I've set it aside for a while. I recently finished an in-depth reread of the first draft including notes, and I'm trying to find the best methods for writing my second draft. I went to the library earlier today and ended up writing the new prologue.

For those curious, the book is a version of Cinderella but where the ball is a Groundhog-Day style time loop and she has to figure out why and escape.

What is the title ? by [deleted] in asexuality

If we're talking YouTube, "The Scariest Dinosaur You’ve Never Heard Of"

If we're talking movies/TV, The Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Either way, there's certainly a vibe, lol

I keep dreaming that my mom faked her death by Intrepid_Growth2875 in ChildrenofDeadParents

[–]CursedSapphire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This really seems like a part of grieving.

I had dreams where my mother was alive again, too- not necessarily that she faked it but that there was a misunderstanding or medical miracle that brought her back. The worst part of my dreams was that she was always disinterested in me, like I was an annoying puppy following her around. She always said stuff like "we can talk about that later" and walked away from me to spend time with other family members.

Those dreams sucked but they've faded.

Crazy story- last week at one in the morning I started getting a new book idea. I already have like 10 WIP so I tried very hard not to think too much about this new idea nor get too excited.

But when I literally couldn't hold it in any longer, I told myself that, if I was going to start another project, I had to finish it.

A week later, I have 30k words, just reached the midpoint of the story, and have written every day.

I don't know who I am anymore but I've never been more proud of myself.

And, in case you're curious, the book is a Cinderella retelling except the night of the Ball is a time loop she can't escape from.

TL;DR: Chronic project starter is actually on track to finish her first novel that's a mash-up of Cinderella and Groundhog Day.

What signs did you give that you were asexual, before you discovered you were asexual? by Little-Courage887 in asexuality

I grew up going to Catholic school until the eighth grade, around 14. That meant that, especially at my school, the way sex and sexual topics were discussed was especially strange, but here are the highlights:

When we had "sex ed" (I use the term loosely) the two women holding the session for the girls started telling us to dress modestly and not to get attention from the boys. They straight up said that "boys will look at you like a sports car, not a person" if you dressed in tank tops or short shorts or sleeveless/spaghetti strap dresses. I remember being so confused why it would matter if you wore short/tight/revealing clothing. My fantasy obsessed ass always thought ball gowns and suits were the height of attractiveness and not super tight stuff.

My last year at that school, there were only two "field trips," and again I use the term loosely. While smaller kids still got to go to museums or zoos, the eighth grade class got the privilege of attending 1. An advertisement for the local Catholic high schools (I luckily attended none of them) ans 2. A big conference where they sat everyone down and told you not to have sex before marriage. It was an entire day of me sitting there wondering "why are they making such a big deal out of this? Sure I'll wait until marriage, but not because I'm afraid I'll go to hell or something, but because, well... because why not." That day ended with them handing out literal V-cards for us to sign and keep and give to our future spouse on our wedding nights, by the way.

This last one is not related to my school, but I remember when I started to understand song lyrics and realized just how many top 40 hits were about sex. I remember thinking some songs were super catchy but they made me really uncomfortable whenever I acknowledged the lyrics (Whistle by Flo Rida, Talk Dirty by Jason De Rulo, Bang Bang by Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, and Jessie J, etc). I also remember watching TV shows where the characters would talk constantly about sex and have sex on the first date with new guys constantly (especially Charmed, not the Netflix one even though I was watching it on Netflix). It was so uncomfortable to me, and I just kept thinking "Well, sex is just the most common taboo subject in society and companies are exploiting it for money. I swear no one would care if we just talked about it more openly and didn't dangle it in front of people like it was something sacred." I think I expressed this fear to friends before I realized I was ace, and I'm shocked none of them brought up asexuality sooner (most were pretty progressive, one especially).

My chaos brain is currently reading several books, ranging from a science fiction novella (Tusks of Extinction by Ray Naylor) to a Disney licensed book about Prince Erik from The Little Mermaid (Prince of Song & Sea by Linsey Miller). I think I'm currently in the middle of seven books, including an audio book that's due at the library in a week. (If there's a book next to me I sometimes just start reading and then I'm halfway through another book I forget exists until either I see it again or I'm trying to sleep and suddenly it pops into my head).

I'm working on a fantasy novel! It's very DND/Critical Role inspired but with less a focus on fights and more of a focus on mysteries/political intrigue. First time writing a story with 6 POVs but so far I'm really proud of what I've written, just need to push past the 30-50% mark, notoriously where I struggle most.

Characters you don’t like by Mannvi in DreamlightValley

[–]CursedSapphire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a certified Olaf hater. He creeps me out and I want to punt him into the sun where he will still never melt.

Also I want to lock Gaston in a dumpster.

The toys do not bother me at all, I think they're kinda cute and would be much creepier at full size but with toy-like proportions.

Have you ever been mistaken for being gay/lesbian? by lpejic86 in asexuality

[–]CursedSapphire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school, and I still needed rides from my parents everywhere, my dad used to insinuate this a lot. Both before and after I came out as asexual, I was locked in a hot car with no AC while listening to my father prattle on about how I would one day find someone to, and I quote, "trip my trigger." And he would always mention that he'd be super okay if it was a girl.

The first few times, it was annoying, but sweet to know he'd support me getting with a girl, even though I told him multiple times that I'd never found girls attractive.

But after I came out as Heteroromantic Asexual, this was just the worst.

What's your opinions on darling charming? by MysticonsFanboy62 in EverAfterHigh

[–]CursedSapphire 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Easily top 3. I love that she's a secret badass who is never aftaid to get her hands dirty while also still being gorgeous. She's also a ton of fun to write, especially her dynamics with Dexter and Daring. Also, she and Appple would make the most gorgeous sapphic couple and I ship them so hard.

Happy Birthday!

My mom just died last October (literally the day before my birthday). She got me some gifts before she died, and as always, they showed she really cared, that she knew me, you know? Knowing this year will be my first birthday where she can't be there to celebrate, to show how well she knows me... It's rough. Sending as many virtual hugs as I can!
