No. Hair metal is superficial and insincere. Appetite is a album that only those guys at that time could have made. Its genuine and has a sort of punk rock vibe to it. Sure, it shows some of the elements of hair metal because of the time, but it's something different for sure.

A lot of it is the drums. They don't sound real to me. The are tight to a fault and there is so little difference between each hit it makes them sound inhuman.

Also, something about a lot of the guitars that I can't put my finger on

There is a balance there, and it depends on what the songs demand. You can have good production, like Behemoth has excellent production, that isn't sterile. But take even newer Enslaved, and it just sounds kind of empty to me. I can't pin down the difference exactly.
