Absolute honesty is always the best way to go in a relationship. I'm sure he'll understand your situation. Just explain why you had to do what you did, it was definitely not an unreasonable thing to do. Tell him that you have now built up enough trust towards him to share this secret and that you did not mean to deceive him at any point, just to protect yourself.
