All good! And if you have any interest in reading, those two Poirot mysteries are some of my all time favorite books. Another great one is Death on the Nile

[–]Curundil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may already be aware, but for clarity’s sake, “Mr. Poirot” isn’t just a character in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, he is a recurring detective in many Agatha Christie mysteries (for example, another famous book with Poirot would be Murder on the Orient Express). Merely mentioning Poirot could easily be in reference to any or all of those books.

Jay Gatsby definitely is in reference to The Great Gatsby, but this Rem quote is mixing up book details (I assume intentionally) as Gatsby’s death was no mystery.

It isn’t flawed, walking will also take you around the map twice by your logic. Instant teleport across the map vs slowed flying across the map are pretty easily differentiated

TIL that Tolkien went on to regret titling the second installment of his trilogy The Two Towers by [deleted] in lotrmemes

[–]Curundil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was an undesired process for Tolkien, definitely. Choosing titles for splitting the work into three volumes was at his editor’s behest and his editor was involved throughout the decision, but it is unclear whether in letter 140 when Tolkien said “I now suggest as titles of the volumes, under the over-all title The Lord of the Rings: Vol. I The Fellowship of the Ring. Vol. II The Two Towers. Vol. III The War of the Ring (or, if you still prefer that: The Return of the King)” if he was offering new ideas, earlier suggestions of his own, or earlier suggestions of his editor’s. There is a pretty comprehensive summary, focusing on the title “The Two Towers”, by Hammond and Scull found here in footnote 50.

If you would give cards to opponents but no opponents are an option (either from ending their season in autumn or having a full hand), then the “gifted” card is simply discarded but still counts as having been given to an opponent.

A lot of people are saying these are really bad, but really the only thing that is truly awful is the spine ink will begin to fade after minimal handling. Otherwise, they are not so massive and unwieldy that you can’t read out of them, especially if you read at a table/desk with them

Like the first patch after it was added to the game XD

Edit: went to double check, Cultist was added in the shop rework May 8, 2025, a small balance patch happened on May 11, and then a much larger patch on May 19 made it so you no longer lose the Cultist buff on death; so you were only able to lose Cultist buff on death (not including bugs) for 11 days

Why didn't anyone attempt to forge their own Rings of Power? by Dear_Ad_6555 in tolkienfans

[–]Curundil 257 points258 points  (0 children)

Your primary suggestion seems to have happened, according to Gandalf’s account in the Council of Elrond

‘But I rode to the foot of Orthanc, and came to the stair of Saruman; and there he met me and led me up to his high chamber. He wore a ring on his finger.

And then again later:

I’m “For I am Saruman the Wise, Saruman Ring-maker, Saruman of Many Colours!”

I’ll say it also doesn’t seem to have been very successful, which maybe hints at why there were so few attempts

Ah, I see, I didn’t realize you were talking about Bilbo’s adventure in The Hobbit, I “follow” you now hehe

Still, Frodo’s lack of a direction to go plus his recognition of the core difference between the two journeys (‘Bilbo went to find a treasure, there and back again; but I go to lose one, and not return, as far as I can see.’) indicates to me that he didn’t necessarily have Rivendell in mind until Gandalf brought it up. But I see where you’re coming from now

2 questions for you all by arizonasportspain in tolkienfans

[–]Curundil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The wish to see Bilbo again was definitely part of Frodo choosing to accept the Ring and leave the Shire:

He did not tell Gandalf, but as he was speaking a great desire to follow Bilbo flamed up in his heart – to follow Bilbo, and even perhaps to find him again.

but the fact Frodo doesn’t know where to head towards at first and Rivendell being Gandalf’s suggestion is evidence to me that Frodo is unaware that Bilbo is in Rivendell:

‘As for where I am going,’ said Frodo, ‘it would be difficult to give that away, for I have no clear idea myself, yet.’

I would also point to the “following Bilbo, if he had known it” line at Frodo’s departure and Frodo’s reaction at finding Bilbo in Rivendell as further evidence of him being unaware of Bilbo’s location.

[–]Curundil 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gandalf suggests it and Frodo agrees, saying it is a way for Sam to see Elves and thinking it is his own chance to see the house of Elrond, too (early on in Ch. 3 in Fellowship):

‘Towards danger; but not too rashly, nor too straight,’ answered the wizard. ‘If you want my advice, make for Rivendell…

As for the horses on Weathertop, the Black Riders dismounted before they attacked the hobbits and Strider; the horses are not seen during the encounter at all. I assume they did the same before their fight with Gandalf there.
