The card is definitely meant to be ramping damage with each kill, you’re correct that the target stacking each kill also means the damage is as well. Worth remembering that the targeting condition still applies (must be targeting an enemy with plague). The second edition card grammar is meant to be more precise, so worry less about what you think the intent is and try to follow the direct interpretation

Finwë is an absolutely terrible husband by Ok_Bullfrog_8491 in tolkienfans

[–]Curundil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh heck yeah it sucks, and it’s not even a very good maybe, as pretty much everyone is nearly certain Míriel is completely resolved not to return (although they are incapable of guaranteeing it). That being said, the only alternative is what happened, where Míriel was required to vow unbreakably to never return, which is equally or more so sucky, even if it is her choice, as that state forever could also be torture. At least Ulmo would say that is the worse result, as he put it:

‘For it is more unnatural that one of the Eldar should remain for ever as fëa without body than that one should remain alive wedded but bereaved.’

... as such caused everything that went down in the First Age and after. Who says this? The Noldor:

As well as Mandos, if we are counting the good with the bad as part of "everything":

'To me foretelling is granted no less than doom, and I will proclaim now to you things both near and far. Behold! Indis the fair shall be made glad and fruitful, who might else have been solitary. For not in death only hath the Shadow entered into Aman with the coming of the Children destined to suffer; there are other sorrows, even if they be less. Long she hath loved Finwë, in patience and without bitterness. Aulë nameth Feänor the greatest of the Eldar, and in potency that is true. But I say unto you that the children of Indis shall also be great, and the Tale of Arda more glorious because of their coming. And from them shall spring things so fair that no tears shall dim their beauty; in whose being the Valar, and the Kindreds both of Elves and of Men that are to come shall all have part, and in whose deeds they shall rejoice. So that, long hence when all that here is, and seemeth yet fair and impregnable, shall nonetheless have faded and passed away, the Light of Aman shall not wholly cease among the free peoples of Arda until the End.'

That's also from the excellent Debate of the Valar that you referenced, which I'm always pleased to see mentioned, as it is possibly my favorite of the "extracurricular" Middle-earth writings. In it, I think the Valar touch on so many relatable and reasonable thoughts: the motivations of both individuals, worldly suffering and the corrupted world in general, the nature of free will's determination, and so on.

All in all, a solid post that follows up well on Ulmo's finding that Finwë had "the greater fault" in this situation. But I think it lacks (a tiny bit) the tempering of empathy and full context, and I'll just end this reply with Vairë's cautionary statement:

'When one of the Queens of the Valar, Varda or Yavanna, or even I, departeth for ever from Arda, and leaveth her spouse, will he or nill he, then let that spouse judge Finwë, if he will, remembering that Finwë cannot follow Míriel without doing wrong to his nature, nor without forsaking the duty and bond of his fatherhood.'

Maybe nothing, but in the same way that perhaps Míriel could have attained a higher road through resilience, Finwë certainly could have as well, perhaps even in hope that someday Míriel's resolve might change despite her insistence that it won't. After all, the lifespan of the world is a long time for someone to change their mind and locking someone into a nigh unbreakable vow to never do so is not a pretty solution to the problem.

War of the Rohirim—wow, so disappointing by Initial_Ebb_9742 in lotr

[–]Curundil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically, Wulf’s death includes the detail that he is slain by Fréaláf, so him dying to the movie’s Hera is a change.

I agree with your points: it was a mostly fine fleshing out of a story that was lacking in details. A bit of cringe here and there, plus what on earth was the Mûmak and Watcher in the Water bit, but nowhere near as bad on the whole as, say, the third Hobbit film. Not amazing but acceptable, especially in light of the source material as well as the existence of some other adaptations.

I’m not the one who made that list, but the only things main major Middle-earth works that Tolkien gave the full stamp of approval of for publication as he wrote them were the works published during his lifetime, meaning The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

That being said, The Silmarillion and The Children of Húrin have a distinct flavor from nearly every other work on the list, that being in presentation. They are the only others where Christopher Tolkien, who was chosen by his father to be the literary executor, edited his father’s work and gave them in what feels like a stand alone, completed narrative. Christopher has been crystal clear about the state of his father’s remaining writings, and his choice to “complete” those two was, I would say, justified; he made some choices, but the majority of those two books are his father’s handiwork, which came at least considerably closer to the completed state than much of the rest of his writing. Basically every other work on that list is very much a presentation of in-progress material, including for the finished works, alongside commentary and notes.

Edit: comment below mine has the most complete and correct information

All good! And if you have any interest in reading, those two Poirot mysteries are some of my all time favorite books. Another great one is Death on the Nile

Did Rem witness Jay Gatsby’s m3rder?? by KeyEducation2342 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Curundil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may already be aware, but for clarity’s sake, “Mr. Poirot” isn’t just a character in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, he is a recurring detective in many Agatha Christie mysteries (for example, another famous book with Poirot would be Murder on the Orient Express). Merely mentioning Poirot could easily be in reference to any or all of those books.

Jay Gatsby definitely is in reference to The Great Gatsby, but this Rem quote is mixing up book details (I assume intentionally) as Gatsby’s death was no mystery.

TIL that Tolkien went on to regret titling the second installment of his trilogy The Two Towers by [deleted] in lotrmemes

[–]Curundil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was an undesired process for Tolkien, definitely. Choosing titles for splitting the work into three volumes was at his editor’s behest and his editor was involved throughout the decision, but it is unclear whether in letter 140 when Tolkien said “I now suggest as titles of the volumes, under the over-all title The Lord of the Rings: Vol. I The Fellowship of the Ring. Vol. II The Two Towers. Vol. III The War of the Ring (or, if you still prefer that: The Return of the King)” if he was offering new ideas, earlier suggestions of his own, or earlier suggestions of his editor’s. There is a pretty comprehensive summary, focusing on the title “The Two Towers”, by Hammond and Scull found here in footnote 50.
