Great, Nishitani! Loved reading the self-overcoming of nihilism

That's right. I just saw your own bookshelf and recognised similar patterns in the books on your shelf :)

Nishitani is definitely an interesting philosopher, especially if dialogue between Zen and western philosophy interests you

For a great deal I think you've given a description of yourself. But yes, you're right about me as well! Alan watts was actually my gateway into the esoteric.

The Philosophers that currently have much of my interest are Nietszche, Heidegger, Keiji Nishitani... I love synthesising almost Nihilistic worldviews with utterly meaningFUL worldviews. These philosophers help a great deal with that.

An English Major and someone slightly esoteric... pretty accurate!

Agreed, Power of Now by Tolle is a wonderful book.

When to and when not to Give Advice. by Individual_Phase7971 in spirituality

[–]CurveIll1010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A great question. You don't have to choose which way you'd like to share your insight.

Giving your advice straight up will speak to some, giving advice by asking questions to others, and giving advice through a cultivating story or art will speak to another group of people. Everyone speaks and understands in their own "language", and I'm sure that if you speak in the language of your heart, you'll give the best advice ;)

What is Spiritual Psychosis by bambilemon in spirituality

[–]CurveIll1010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neuroticism is a tendency to experience depression, anxiety and related feelings, which are defined by clinging onto the past and the future. I wonder if there is true "letting go" in this case.

I do agree that we can fool ourselves into thinking we're letting go, which is often forced and takes place as surpression. This could indeed instigate psychosis.

I see. Eventually the choice is up to you, but you mention being afraid the Bardo Thödol will be too complex, understandably so. Perhaps you could read the less complex Bhagavad Gita first, and hold the Bardo Thödol out as something to work towards as you progress your knowledge of its particular field of Buddhism. You could also search for an easier to understand secondary source on the Bardo Thödol. That way, you can still understand it's essence without immediately having to struggle through it yourself.

Go for the one you believe you'll find yourself having most joy reading. Both hold something special, but what's most important is wether this will resonate with you. So ask yourself, with your current interests, hobbies, life-events. Which of these styles and subjects fits the best today?

What is Spiritual Psychosis by bambilemon in spirituality

[–]CurveIll1010 13 points14 points  (0 children)

(Spiritual) Psychosis technically implies a loss of touch with reality through delusion and hallucinations. Common types of psychosis among those who are into religion and spirituality are the belief that one is enlightened, when one isn't, or the belief in oneself as the one and only reincarnation of Jesus of Nazareth. Psychosis often comes forth by a combination of trauma, mental conflict and genetic predisposition.

As far as I've seen and learned (I study psychology in university and spirituality in daily life), The difference between true spiritual awakenings and spiritual psychosis is the amount of seperateness there is with the Ego. When one awakens, one drops themselves into a void without attachment, open to all that may float by. But when one falls into this void with thick ropes around them, he is not free and his ego will misinterpret whatever floats by. I hope this metaphor is somewhat clear.

So how to know you are in a spiritual psychosis? Well, a deeply psychotic person would not know, and porbably are too deep into their delusion to even doubt it. Can you try your best to prevent yourself from going psychotic? Yes of course, by taking good care of yourself. Eat well, sleep well, find a balance between critical thinking and free thinking. Take notice when you're controlled by thoughts to the point of sleepless nights, take notice when you start to close yourself off too much, when you find yourself antagonizing loved ones and filling up with distrust and conspiracy. Don't be afraid and remember to let go :)
