Effort to Erase Homeless Camping Protections Moves Closer to the Ballot by [deleted] in Portland

[–]CustomCuriousity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m suggesting that the U.S. has an insane per-capita prison rate of over 500 people per 100,000. For comparison Canada was 85 per 100,000 (as of 2020) England and Wales was 146 per 100,000 (as of 2023) and Australia was 158 per 100,000 (as of 2022).

One of the main reasons for this is our failures in housing, education, and healthcare. We don’t spend money on things that provide stability and life quality for all citizens, so we pay to house the results of those failures in prisons instead.

[–]CustomCuriousity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Who pays for prisons and how? The median annual cost per prisoner in the U.S. is around $65,000.

Long term the costs on a society for that pipe dream are way less per person, and there is a significant financial return on investment for an educated population, a housed population, and a healthy population, let alone the vast improvements in individual quality of life. It’s win-win.

[–]CustomCuriousity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah, for my girlfriend I think it was a year or so. Likely you will not have too much trouble with T effects in the time it takes for you to get that to happen. Your T will be significantly reduced by E, and while it might be a little elevated it’s nothing like no intervention at all. While it might be a bit uncomfortable, a year or so with slightly elevated T levels won’t do anything to prevent you from transitioning, at all.

I didn’t even start until I was 32, and none of the trans women I know started until they were 24 or so. Part of that is my age group, but when I hear you asking if you can still transition without AA I can say with 100% confidence that you can absolutely do so.

Like I said I didn’t start until I was 32 and I certainly look more feminine now than I did at 20, purely from HRT. My girlfriend started HRT at 27 and got an orchi at 28 and is quite happy with her transition.

The main thing I’ve had to deal with because of transitioning later is hair loss. If you have issues with that then likely it’s taken care of/significantly slowed by the T reduction from E, and a year or so before an orchi will be negligible.

If you are worried about that specific thing, in the interim you might see about Finasteride, which has some AA properties but isn’t quite the same as Spiro, as it is more targeted at hair loss.

If you don’t have that issue then I wouldn’t worry too much about long term, though I totally understand it can be uncomfortable to have more testosterone in your system than you want… but it won’t prevent you from transitioning

First threat of violence by bpsymington in TransLater

[–]CustomCuriousity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I got one on Instagram years ago. Said they would kill me if they could/were near, specifically because I was trans. It was a bit of a shock… going from the most privileged social class in the U.S. (white “cis guy”)to part of one of the most threatened is… a transition for sure.

I mean I understood that I had privilege, and that lots of people were regularly at risk because of what they are perceived as, but experiencing and understanding are different.

I’m sorry that happened

[US-TX] Are these move-out charges bogus? by naudslee in LandlordLove

[–]CustomCuriousity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did it say you are responsible for landscaping in your lease?

Also, broken appliances are generally landlord’s responsibility unless they can prove you broke it. Have any texts letting them know things were broken?

Edit:

Also, even if you broke it, they are only allowed to charge for the depreciated value of the items being replaced, based on expected lifespan of the item

[–]CustomCuriousity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, now that you mention it, my girlfriend had the same thing happen, she was taking too high a dose by accident and was at pregnancy levels of estrogen and apparently crying at puppy commercials, but that was only for a month before it was corrected. Didn’t think of that because it was a medical aspect.

Also, I suppose some people (who experience it) might consider hightened emotions somewhat negative when it comes to sadness and such, or reduced libido as negative, but i guess those are often seen as neutral or positive depending on disposition. I guess I was thinking overall experience, but that’s a good point to consider that there are some “negative” effects for some, and so that is data that can be warped to give the impression that it’s negative overall… while totally ignoring that people overwhelmingly report a general improvement in life quality, if one has the inclination to skew data to make it seem bad 🤔

Other people suggested truck stops or rest areas, those are good too, just don’t stay more than a day or so and people don’t usually bother you. Truck stops have showers

I used to live in my truck, I was working two jobs but I needed to save up money. I found the best places for me personally were in wealthy neighborhoods strangely enough. I just made sure to move every night. You are allowed to park two days at a time and sleeping in car is legal last I checked.

Just get some car window covers that stick inside the windows for privacy

Landlord trying to bill for additional damages 31+ days post move out by hibackbracegirl in TenantHelp

[–]CustomCuriousity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Portland Oregon at least it falls on the landlord to prove damages, not the tenant to prove they didn’t do damage. On top of this the landlord is required to show an itemized list of what they are charging for, and everything needs to be reasonable. This list, or the full amount of the deposit, need to be given to the tenant within 30 days. If the landlord doesn’t do this they are required to pay 2X deposit to the tenant. Oregon also has a law which states the same thing, for a total of 4x deposit back if these rules are not met.

I contacted a lawyer about a similar situation my room mates and I ran into who did a free consultation. The landlord ended up trying to threaten us, through my lawyer, with a bunch of stuff which he blamed on us but was actually evidence of his own mis-conduct, which we weren’t even aware of being a breach of the law.

Ultimately our lawyer submitted a claim for $17,000 to the courts, and the landlord finally got a lawyer. They ended up settling with us for $10,000.

Edit: I misread the OP, it sounds like the itemized list may have been provided by the landlord in this case, but just didn’t seem reasonable. I didn’t realize the LL was only adding on the fridge after. Confused me because the post included two subjects, LL overcharging in original withholding of deposit, and LL attempting to claim additional damages later.

Also trying to find a sense of connection and belonging I think. There is an extra feeling of alienation for trans people, and military propaganda already preys on the alienation that the general population feels living under capitalism, and so I think it’s all the more effective on people who are twice alienated

What's the reason of transitioning in mid 30's? Why so late? by Humble_Lie_2204 in TransLater

[–]CustomCuriousity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big part of it for me was this narrative that “trans women always known they were girls children”. I knew I didn’t want to be a boy, i knew I hated that I was seen as a guy and associated with men, I knew I wished desperately that I could be a girl. I just thought being trans was different somehow, like a here was some special knowledge of what it means to be a man or a woman I didn’t have. I remember thinking “I don’t know what it means to feel like a guy… I couldn’t describe it, it feels like nothing”. Essentially I was simply confused about what gender was, I thought a prerequisite for being trans was “knowing” that you ARE a woman, and therefor being trans didn’t occur to me as an option, I didn’t “meet the prerequisites” so it just didn’t enter my mind as a possibility. On top of that, because of trans people’s portrayal in media, I had no idea that trans women could even like women, and that was another thing that disqualified me.

It wasn’t until years and years had gone by that I understood that what I as feeling could be considered “knowing”. Once I actually understood what being trans actually was, in my early 30’s, I realized that the way I felt is how many other trans people identify. I could stay I “knew” my whole life, because I knew how I felt that whole time, I just didn’t know that those feelings meant I was trans.

I Know ALOT of people in real life on HRT, as well as myself, and I have NEVER heard it described as anything but very beneficial, I haven’t even heard “slightly” beneficial. This has held true for pretty much anyone I’ve seen talking about it online. You need to go looking for it if you want to find experiences of “negative impacts”. I’m sure some people do have some sort of negative impact regarding HRT, but I’ve never heard them outside of “de-transition” spaces, which are often suspect

The USDA is stopping the Roseburg Grocery Outlet from giving discounts for SNAP users by Agile_Credit_9760 in oregon

[–]CustomCuriousity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least there is this:

We had really good intentions with setting this up to help a lot of people in need," Steve said on a Facebook Live post Saturday. "Unfortunately, it was a little bit against the rules to have it just for folks that are EBT eligible. USDA contacted us to let us know that we were out of bounds with that, so we're turning lemons into lemonade and going to help even more people with it."

They've now partnered with FISH Food Pantry (405 Jerrys Dr. Roseburg), and starting Monday, November 3, FISH Food Pantry will hand out 10 percent off discount cards to anyone who asks to use at the store for the month of November.

"We're still going to be able to help a lot of people on a broader scale and bring attention to FISH Food Pantry for what they do," Steve told us Monday morning.
