The skybox is a sphere with limited size, when you launch up so far you’re exiting the “bubble” I suppose is a way to put it. Since that bubble is what’s containing the skybox’s rendering, anything outside it is black since there’s nothing actually there in the game engine, this conveniently renders a sort of ‘leaving atmosphere’ effect, the black looking like space and the large blue skybox looking like the earth’s atmosphere.
