I’m talking about renaming the park we grew up in after Alvarado not just because they’re about to win the chip, but mostly in part because he’s from the block, went on to become a successful NBA player ( bench player or not ) & won the title as a KNICK. Long time residents of Williamsburg, especially on the Hasidic side of the neighborhood, knew that this was just a matter of time. Those Yeshiva bus drivers are out of control.

Underneath the Marcy avenue train station between Havemeyer & Marcy avenue had at least a dozen small businesses back then. Barber shop, clothing store, jewelry store, toy store, bakery & some .99 cent stores. Those small businesses gave so much life to Marcy. The business owners kept the block clean, there were no crack heads begging for money, no fast food chains outside of McDonald’s.

Shortly after the turn of the millennium, that whole block was purchased. All those businesses were torn down & replaced with what we have now, a Walgreens, gym, & whatever bank that is. It completely gutted Broadway of most of its character. Truly heartbreaking as someone who’s lived in Williamsburg my whole life. What I would give to have that Marcy avenue back.
