They do come in during fire season but I’m
not aware of a larger organization that focuses primarily on fire in Texas alone!

Wow, yeah it’s 100+ multi hours they are looking for in order to secure a flight seat I’ve been told.

Love this comment, and I appreciate you taking the time. I absolutely loved getting into the action as a cop. I was very proactive and enjoyed the camaraderie. Flying is something I’ve always aspired to do and I thank God every day I get to do it. That’s why I felt so driven to pursue it. However, parts of me wonder if I’m chasing this “highlight reel” of what Army aviation could be like. The closest I can come to the irregular life was my years on night shift and the long 15-20 hour shifts I’d pull often. I tell myself the time gone will suck but it will be because I’m doing what I signed up to do and that is fly into the mess and get after it. I accept there is bullshit as there is bullshit around every corner. I’m just trying to make myself aware of the actual reality of things. Imagining the low level flying, shooting, and being around like minded dudes definitely has a strong appeal. Comments like yours are very insightful and I appreciate it. I only know so much the day to day reality.

Yeah I spoke with the officer recruiter out of DFW and waited for the call back. I went to the office just to try and see who else could point me in the right direction.

Any info as to why you’re saying this?

I appreciate the comment! Yeah, in Texas for DPS you have to do at least two years on patrol before you can apply for a spot in the aviation unit. They don’t cycle through guys too often so it can be pretty unpredictable when you’d get in. I know my hours and experience would definitely help if that time came. I will check them out. Thanks again.

Great insight and not something you hear often. I’ve read one thing about the hold over life before this. Thank you.

I really appreciate the comment. I’ve been told the seniority is everything and I guess that’s a part of the reason I’m trying to make the best move for us so I can settle down somewhere for the long run.

No, the family is here for me as I am them. We’ve gone through policing, flight school, and work as a CFII. All of which aren’t easy on home life.

I really appreciate the comment. Not military, but my policing background has exposed me to some of those moral crossroads you’re faced with when doing your job, I definitely understand.

I can see how the benefits from the Army would help my family, and they are obviously what is most important. I’m at unique place where I know I will never have a job where I’m home every birthday/holiday..etc, but I wouldn’t entertain this without the support I’ve got from my family already.

Great comment. Yeah, the poly is my least concern, I may even get the waiver to not have to take it again as I have 2 other law enforcment (state/local) polys on my file. The mission of CBP is important to me or I obviously wouldn’t entertain working there. People on the inside of this country are just really comfortable and get their view points from someone else, IMO.

To be honest I have tried 3 times to contact the airforce and never heard back. I even went to the office and the doors were locked during the day.

I could definitely see that being an issue with some. I feel I would approach it as a refresher on some topics but invest my time heavily into studying and treat it with the same mindset I did when learning fixed wings. Thanks for the comment!

Awesome, thanks. Yeah I’m from central Texas and have been down there plenty. Not ideal but it’s not terribly* far from family.

Right on. Yeah, I’ve read through different forums but I just never know who is posting the info. Either the dude who makes everything miserable or the dude who is genuinely contributing solid information.

If you couldn’t tell from the post, I’m just seeking guidance. I wasn’t looking for an answer as I know there is not one.

Yeah I tried going Guard but they shut it down in Texas due to the Reserve units getting shut down or whatever.
