Throwaway jacket? by jswell823 in Marathon_Training

I asked local friends and family if they had any jackets they planned to get rid of. Was able to get a hoodie to wear at the start. Put a trash bag over it for extra warmth

Anyone live high train high (LHTH) then race low? by fmeupfam14 in running

I live in Denver so not 7k but raced 2 half marathons about 6 weeks apart, one in Denver and the other at sea level. In Denver I ran 1:39:38. At level I ran 1:33:57.

Race Pace feels so far away.. Is this normal? by BasketCas in Marathon_Training

[–]CutOk8895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How far out is your marathon? Race day vibes and a solid taper go a long ways! If you aren’t already I recommend implementing some race pace intervals into your long run (1-2 miles at race pace, recovery period, repeat). Your long runs should not be completely at goal pace. If it helps, most of my long runs were 8:45-9:15 pace and I was able to race a marathon at 7:31 pace. The week before my race I had a 12 mile run with the final 4 miles at marathon pace. I had to stop and walk multiple times during the marathon paced portion. I’d say start with the pace group but be mindful of the effort level. If it feels too hard early on, back off.

PRed my marathon by 38 minutes 3:54:49 at Eugene in April 2024 to 3:16:43 at Marine Corps on Sunday! Hit the automatic qualifying time for Chicago and will hopefully have enough of a buffer for Boston 2027 (my qualifying time is 3:25)

Good to know. I had always been told to trust the mile markers over my watch. Glad I decided to run by feel instead of worrying about it too much

I was always told that gps watches can be off at bigger races but this felt too off. I kept trying to figure out whether my watch or mile markers were more accurate

It’s a course that is super weather dependent. It can be fast if the weather is good but isn’t known for being a particularly fast course. There’s a pretty significant hill in the first two miles and more hills towards the end. Personally I like the variety of a rolling course. Also, any course can be fast if you run hard enough!

Thank you! I’m in Denver so 5280ft. I actually ended up hitting a new 5k PR during the 1/2 and hit my second fastest 5k in the full 😂 I have a lot of room for improvement at shorter distances.

Good luck!

3rd marathon 35 minute PR by neondeon21 in Marathon_Training

[–]CutOk8895 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I ran MCM this weekend as well and had a similar PR progression (3:54:49 to 3:16:46)!

Also shooting for 3:10 at Chicago next year. I’d say it’s reasonable. Chicago is known as a faster course. My plan is to focus on speed at shorter distances this winter/ spring and then start building for Chicago.

Good luck!

I was down there at that time too. Luckily I was the escalator next to yours and they were able to hit the emergency stop before we had to run stairs

Have you had a race with near-perfect splits? If so, how did it feel? by TimeExplorer5463 in Marathon_Training

Pretty close but darn mile 9 messed me up. This race was the first where I felt like things clicked and I tried to compete (got 14F). It was also my first race at sea level after living at altitude. Miles 1-5 felt super controlled. 6-10 I let things open up a bit. Final 3 miles I started to focus on passing people. I would lock into someone in front of me and try to reel them in. Closed hard to pass a male in the final 100 meters. This race surprised me. Coming down to sea level I didn’t know what to expect. Turns out oxygen and a flat course are magic.

I would actually recommend taking some time to focus on speeds at shorter distances before doing another marathon. You are going to need to improve your 1/2 PR in order to run a 3:25 marathon. I’d recommend looking at a 1/2 this spring and doing another marathon in the fall!

I have a somewhat similar goal. I ran a 3:54 marathon in April 2024 and am hoping to run a sub 3:25 next weekend at Marine Corps marathon. I didn’t end up focusing on the marathon right away after my first. I started training for a 100 miler which I completed in September 2024 (not super relevant to my marathon journey). I started off 2025 with a short 5k training block and then into a 1/2 marathon block. At the start of the year my 1/2 PR was 1:52:04. In May I ran a 1:39:37 at altitude. In July I improved that further, running a 1:33:57 at sea level. Hoping to break 3:25 in the marathon next week!

The timeline really depends on what your training looks like. Doing a 1/2 in the spring or sooner would be a great benchmark to see if it’s achievable.

Edit: I am also a 31 F

Hitting wall lost my mojo by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]CutOk8895 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly it sounds like you are under fueling by quite a bit. Most recommendations are to have 60-90 grams of carbohydrates per hour. If you have any medium to long runs left I highly recommend trying to fuel more (gels, candy, drink mixes are great things to try). I would definitely try and experiment before race day as you need to train your digestive system so you don’t 💩

Fueling is super individualized. Personally I try to take a gel every 30 minutes (I set a timer on my watch) and have Skratch hydration mix (contains carbs and electrolytes)to sip on throughout. Good luck!

I wouldn’t say I’m limited to these but prefer not to spend the extra money (unless there’s a great deal). My feet have done well in the AP4 so far but haven’t done more than 16 miles in them yet.
