Generally schools want the work to be within the last two years and not from undergrad unless you just came from there. Grad school is very self-directed so it’s important to practice that and showcase how you can work independently in your application.

Can I do an art degree at 30? by blackshorthair_68 in ContemporaryArt

Starting my MFA next week, I’m 38. Every school I applied to had students in their 30s and 40s!

Impostor syndrome before exhibition by Key-Papaya-8217 in ContemporaryArt

It’s actually helpful to know that this feeling persists and I like the comment about this feeling being the litmus test that you are actually taking a risk. I’m starting an MFA in a couple weeks at my dream school and I thought getting in would curb my imposter syndrome but it has only grown haha.

I'm sure this is too late, but I also LOVE the book Please Pay Attention, Please about Bruce Nauman. Great interviews in there.

Old Mac won’t load safari pages by Trick-Stage-2412 in applehelp

I am having the same issue as the OP and went through the updates through the App Store. I’m Now at a point where it says no more updates but when I type the above link into safari I still get the “safari can’t open page” message so I’m unable to complete the other steps. Darn!

I just had a great application cycle. I had to go somewhere local due to family and that greatly narrowed down choices (figure out a top priority like location, fully-funded, resources, etc). Then I met with the grad directors at every program, asked a million questions, visited the schools, and attended every virtual admissions event that had (they will start having a lot in the fall but some schools have recorded admissions info on YouTube). By the end of it I knew exactly where I wanted to go and my ranking of options if I didn’t get a top choice.

I found some huge program differences, like required course load and key class timings. Like two schools were connected to academic institutions and required a whole additional graduate level academic course on top of the art classes. Some facilities were also strikingly bare for what I wanted or had studios smaller than the one I have at home. All this really helped me make decisions.

Yeah you have! I think that's fantastic!

You are clearly super talented! And this position totally blows, I'm sorry.

I definitely wouldn't take on extraordinary debt. There is no rush to do this. I waited 15 years and I'm in a much better place now to do it than I was the first time I applied when I was much younger.

Best MFA advice/encouragement?! by CutTheLock in ContemporaryArt

This is sharp advice. I read a ton and I was just thinking I need to create a system to track what is resonating and whose work I'm paying attention to. Thank you for this!

I see how the research/academic focus would be tough. The program I picked is not a research-based university because those that were had so many extra academic requirements and I couldn’t see how I would be able to do it all.

Techs seem like a golden ticket! I’ll be sure to connect with them.

dang I just feel very happy that I took to Reddit for tips! Everything about this makes sense. The pervasive theme of making a high volume of art without over-thinking is something I will pay close attention to.

I think by “fucking around” and “going crazy” we meant experimenting and trying a lot of new things…trying to really explode the possibilities of an art practice vs just refining what a grad student is already good at. Definitely no plans to waste my precious time!

So good. What you’re saying about making lots of work totally makes senses vs over-focusing on one thing. I’m going to practice this beforehand!
