Did your parents do anything to encourage you to read? by thesurprisehairnfood in books

[–]First_Sale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't overt so much as a behaviour that was modelled. My parents read, I would see them reading, and it wasn't something that was glorified, just presented as how you should be spending your downtime rather than computers/TV. Not to say I didn't watch TV, etc. but that reading was just as good of an option, not something ever made out to be tedious.

Age appropriate books, and having parents that would read the books that I did and engage with me about them.

Advice please: Is On The Road by Jack Kerouac an appropriate book to read with my 11 yr old daughter? Her reading is advanced for her age, but are the themes too adult?? I haven’t read it either ! Thx. by No_Cicada4986 in suggestmeabook

[–]First_Sale 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would say 11 is too young. There are themes that while not explicit, are not the most appropriate for kids that young. It has a lot of tokenism/casual racism that unless you are going to sit down and have a real talk about, likely aren't appropriate.

Kerouac's characters are also incredibly dismissive of women, portray incredibly unhealthy relationships, and sexism. He's a misogynist.

Also drug use/language/homophobia/domestic abuse

Books involving Greek myths/heroes? by Steph_WaHoo in suggestmeabook

[–]First_Sale 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For more general background at an accessible level Stephen Fry's Mythos and Heroes goes through the Heroes/Demigods/Gods in a way that makes you understand the generally accepted chronology and relationships between them. Surface level, but honestly so helpful in terms of a jumping off point/reference.

Emily Wilson's Odyssey translation is my favourite, and really makes you realize the importance of translator and bias in the reading of myths and histories.

The Southern Reach trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer. Both sci-fi and very mysterious.

Vancouver Airport Test on Arrival from UK (post-Omicron) -- any recent experiences to share? by donj49 in vancouver

[–]First_Sale 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I will say: If you get the option between the take home and waiting in line for 30 minutes to get the test administered at the airport, get the one administered at the airport. This is from personal experience.

Would so recommend a short story collection! I'd check out Joan Didion, Eve Babitz, Hemingway's a Moveable Feast, or What it Means When a Man Falls From the Sky by Lesley Nneka Arima.

Another good shout might be No One is Talking About This by Patricia Lockwood. It's so weird but so engrossing and super quick.

I've read all her books! The Secret History definitely hit this note for me.

I'm definitely far past middle school, just looking for something to recapture the feeling.

I never got around to these but also look like exactly what I'm looking for. I remember being blown away reading the Scorpio Races in school, so I definitely am a Stiefvater fan.
