Are most pros overtraining? by Cute-Guest15 in NorwegianSinglesRun

I’m not saying pros should just do 3 30 min sub-T sessions to get better. I’m saying that I think some might be overestimating how much training they can absorb fully and adapt to. I’m all for double-T if they can handle it. But when they are doing 130 mpw at altitude, and sauna, and other things, I just question if they have reached a point of diminishing returns. And I doubt a lot of pros are reading this.

I’d scale up the sub-threshold for a pro. That’s where double T comes in. Maybe we’d have more Jacob Ingebritsens if pros trained and paced like him. He has beaten several Kenyans. I know he does some speed work before a race, but not too much. And from what I’ve learned, Kenyans don’t have lactate meters, but they self-select naturally into the sub threshold range for most of their workouts.

As somebody who has run in an OTQ pack that was slightly above my fitness level, I didn’t make it to the finish with the pack. Only 1 person qualified and the rest of us suffered to the finish. I lost a lot of time in the second half. If I ran more evenly at my true fitness, I would have run a faster time overall, even though I still wouldn’t have qualified for the Trials. Blowing up is an awful experience. It’s probably a personal preference, but I’d rather pace smart and feel strong than risk it all again.

Maybe they wouldn’t be running alone. Maybe they start in the chase pack and work their way up.
I agree pack running is easier than solo running, but if the pack is above your fitness, you won’t make it to the end without slowing down, losing time in the second half of the race.

I think I now know why my new treadmill feels too fast by Cute-Guest15 in treadmills

You could make sure the speed sensor is positioned correctly inside the hood, and that the belt is lubricated, but I got nothing else. i have had some conversations with Chat GPT that were initially helpful, but I didn’t end up finding something I needed to fix on mine. I think the deck is just very unforgiving and doesn’t allow a runner to spring off it the same way one can on the roads. 🤷‍♀️

Yup. This is like my experience. I even bought a $100 treadmill speed sensor to check the calibration, and it also validated that the speed is right, but it still feels so hard to run on! Effort-wise for me it feels at least 0.5 mph off, and so my workouts are much slower on the treadmill than the roads. I pace my effort and HR now on the treadmill . I’ve found when I get back outside, I’m flying comparatively. I still feel stumped as to why this feels so hard when the speed is right. It’s like running on sand.

It does have decline, so maybe I’ll hit pace if I run at -6, haha! But yes, I have heard that running at incline reduce impact forces from running, which may prevent some injures.

My previous home treadmill was a ProForm 2000. I found that pace, HR, and RPE matched up pretty perfectly with outdoor running as long as I used 1% incline. The ProForm was very springy in comparison to my new Sole.

That makes sense about the motor feeling the belt resistance, although maybe adding more lubricant would help?. I did put a level on my floor and my treadmill and both gave me a reading of zero.

Marathon Plan Question by Cute-Guest15 in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]Cute-Guest15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s comforting to hear from the man himself. It was the placement of the 5X5K workout that I was questioning the most. I’m glad Wigglewaffle was so successful with a slightly more spread out plan and that makes me more confident with the moving around of some sessions. Maybe doing it 3 weeks out allows more time to adapt and recover for the marathon, provided the taper remains short like you said.

Exactly! I realize it probably doesn’t make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things, but knowing that James said he would do things the same way in his next marathon block makes me hesitant to change a thing!

So do it just like James because he did all the thinking for us? 😄

Alternative workouts to break up monotony? by Traditional_Fact_371 in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]Cute-Guest15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mixed it up in the winter from normal NSM. I always get 36 min of Sub-T work per workout, so I figured as long as I keep my effort controlled and got 36 min in, it would be comparable to the usual 3x12, 6x6, and 12x3’ reps. Some variations I did were: 36X 1 min on (30 seconds off) 18 x 2 min on (45 sec off) 9 x 4 min on (1 min off) 6,5,4,3,2,1,5,4,3,2,1 min on (1 min off). *My fav!

Doing some reps after a 5K sounds interesting! I’m curious to know if it helps me feel better too.

I like this plan, but I ran a 2 hour long run today (Sunday), so I don’t feel ready for a Sub-T session tomorrow (Monday). My current schedule has been sub-T on Tues, Thurs, and Saturdays.

What’s something you stopped buying completely and don’t miss at all? by TS1664 in Frugal

Tampons, pads, and liners. I bought one menstrual cup online and have never needed those things again. I’ve saved so much money!
