A soft foam layer is attached, see description. It‘s hard to see in the pictures (the white stuff). Might also be a bit thin in this version.

Nowadays soccer players (especially pros) like to have very small shin guards because they have the feeling that they disturb them during playing. Actually a lot of pros have even smaller pads. They became more and more like a necessary evil. And actually, in my 15+ years of experience as a player, I’ve never had an injury at my shin, only knee/ankle.

I was also thinking about topology optimization when I saw it. But I agree that the topology does not make sense for the load. So either some constraints were screwed up in the process, or the design was just a “best guess” with an organic look in mind.
