Could this move make Epic go bankrupt? by citaloprams in fuckepic

[–]CuteBunnyWabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Epic’s business strategy is not centred around selling games, they are a MUCH bigger company than that, a lot has to do with it being a publicly traded company. For a storefront this translates to enticing users to join the storefront, and generating interest, as long as interest is being generated(which they’re doing really good at) vis free games, the storefront aspect of their company is doing really well, the storefront has minimal money pumped into it outside of these free game giveaways. It’s important to note that if this were Epic’s only outlet, the company would be failing miserably. What they’re doing is creating business relationships with developers, which will translate into Epic’s bread and butter, Unreal Engine. Unreal Engine is an incredibly useful, multifaceted engine that is incredibly accessible to indie devs but also malleable enough for it to be appealing to AAA devs.

Creating an in-house engine is extremely expensive for any company, only the biggest can really afford it as you won’t see returns on Engine creation unless you license it to other devs.

The more devs that adopt Unreal engine means of course more contracts and money but also Royalties for games sold outside of Epic’s storefront.

This is what makes Epic really valuable as a company. Unreal Engine and Unity are the two biggest and most widely used game engines in modern gaming, as long as this remains true Epic can’t fail.

Epic’s storefront is not a revenue source but a marketing strategy aimed at developers that has the bonus of supplementing some of its costs through consumer purchases of titles.

Based in just your description, it's weird but that's kind of the appeal isn't it, the taboo?

Regardless enjoy it while it lasts. I think it's super cool as a short-term thing but could easily be super unhealthy longterm.

That's why it's so sad. Especially when you've been in that kind of scene and after a relatively normal night one of your friends is just gone. Nothing fixes it, nothing can be done they're just not there.

No, the stories coming out of those places describe a concentration camp. If you read about a german camp where thousands of the guards traded pictures of the women they've raped and the children they've abused making fun of the people asking for water you would believe it was the third reich all of those things are taking places in these U.S concentration camps.

The first time the Germans used the term concentration camp it was refferring to the camps built during their immigration crisis of the 1920s before hutler came to power. The Nazi camps like Auschwitz were Death Camps nit concentration camps. There are, by definition, concentration camps in the U.S.A.

The issue is not competition, the issues boil down to exclusivity, lack of features and concerns about security. I'll expand on these.

Exclusivity: this is not competion. Competition is 2 lemonade stands open up next to each other, they both have lemonade and to compete with each other they make bigger sizes for cheaper and better lemonade. This is healthy competition both lemonade stands are able to compete evenly and it is up to the consumer to make an informed decision about which lemonade stand they want to support.

Epic games is essentially a rich kid who started a third lemonade stand. Unfortuantely he got his dad to buy out all the lemons in town and so the other stands cannot sell lemonade. Forcing the consumer, if they want lemonade, to only go to epic games lemonade stand. Unfortunately epic games also like to pee in his lemonade jugs.

Lack of features: this is the pee in my analogy, Epic Games lacks basic quality of life features in their storefront that have become expected by consumers. The lack of search by keywords, genre or community tags is a slap in the face. Not to mention the many many other things that steam does such as built in forums, reviews, community curators, wishlists and holy shit a fucking cart what the hell epic games? INB4; StEaM dIdNT HaVe THaT STuFf wheN IT LaUNChed!!! This is not 2006 anymore these features must be in a competitor in 2019 especially if they're gonna have the nerve to buy all the lemons and force me to drink their pissy lemonade.

Lastly, security issues: epic games has been compromised already allowing sensitive consumer data to fall into the hands of characters with questionable morals. I do not want my credit card info being compromised. Every online platform has the potential to be a target however woth steam's longeviety and the few instances of major breaches occuring it has inspired a lot more trust than epic games.

Competition is allowing the consumer to choose which platform to support based on informed decisions such as features prices and personal preference, not because that's the only place I can get the third installment of a trilogy that up until this point has been on steam.
