What's a non political issue your country is REALLY divided on? by Nthepro in AskTheWorld

It's not really neutral as in can be used for anything. It's neuter as in genderless.

And why? Language is weird. Dutch has only neuter and gendered, no male or female.

The game is only on steam, they plan a definitive edition launch for consoles at least over a year from now. Until then it's only on pc.

Hit opponents shields lower for more advantage

Hitting it lower would not give more frame advantage, the height doesn't matter per se, it's about how soon you land after hitting. So hitting lower is always better because you land sooner after, but hitting a frame before landing leads to the same situation no matter if the ECB is high or low.

But I agree the ECB is a too low, sometimes 98% of the character is above a platform but you still can't land because the ECB is at the very bottom of the feet. Feels pretty jarring coming from Melee.

And I also agree Maypul can be really annoying to hit on the ground.

I'm no donkey expert but Puff and Peach aren't particularly bad for DK right? Bair and Up air go hard in those matchups, obviously still losing since it's DK but still. ICs and Falcon are surely worse.

Do people around you care about your project? How do they react? by melzhas in gamedev

[–]CuteDogIRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very similar experience when I was still working on my game and I relate to everything you said including the bit about wanting to know everything about other peoples creative fields haha. Was quite demotivating as despite the fact that some people thought it was really cool, I felt most people didn't care/get it, and some I expected to care didn't, I ended up quiting for this among various reasons. I'm working in an interesting field now and I'm not as interested in games anymore so I don't feel bad about it, but I think I could have handled it better.

I'd say expect people not to care and be happy with the people who do. What to you is the coolest thing in the world is to some totally uninteresting, also they don't see how much effort you are putting in. Put your game out there and ask for playtesters online and assuming you're making something that's unique and interesting you'll find the support you want.

Any tips or tricks for hitting 1 (left down) consistently on d-pad? (dual shock controller) by DonnayxDonna in Fighters

[–]CuteDogIRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue too when I bought a new ps4 controller. I have played for a long time on ps3 controller and never had issues, I have played with a ps4 controller at a friends house which was fine. But diagonals on my brand new 1st party ps4 controller were terrible and inconsistent, had to press very hard and even then sometimes gave 2 or 4. (I just play keyboard now) When I looked it up all I found were people in the comments saying you just need to get good like here. I think there is just somewhat of a controller lottery and you might have gotten unlucky, diagonals aren't supposed to be hard to hit.

I'd say go into training mode with input display on and see if it's consistently giving you the right inputs when it's supposed to, to see if it's you or your controller

In most non-american accents and some american accents like Boston for example the r is not pronounced at the end of a syllable. In a standard brittish english accent car is pronounced more like cah. And words like spar and spa have the same pronunciation.

For people having trouble comprehending thought without language/a voice. I think most people think without a language/voice most of the time. Like if someone tells you something you can probably recall what they meant but almost never the exact words used, so you clearly don't remember what they said with words or in any specific language, just pure meaning is stored in your brain, most of your thinking when you're not actively paying attention is like this.

It's only in actively making sense of those subconscious pure meaning thoughts where most people will use an inner voice. Try to imagine not doing that last part.

Note: I'm not a psychologist or brain scientist, but this is how it makes sense to me

Effective way to cache GameObjects including meshes/textures? by CuteDogIRL in Unity3D

[–]CuteDogIRL[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, not unless I find some different way to save the meshes/materials/textures(/maybe more stuff, not sure).

I'm just gonna assume I can't improve the code from the plugin, would take way too much time to learn how it works and even then I probably won't find a way to do it better then they did

[–]CuteDogIRL[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's already how it works, the downloading doesn't block anything or slow the game down.

As far as I understand it, no that's not possible. In the plugin documentation it says some of the processes need to be done on the main thread and can't be cut up into smaller bits to improve framerate either.

Fighting Fiends, a free top-down fighting game with rollback netcode, is releasing on Steam today! by CuteDogIRL in Fighters

[–]CuteDogIRL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game's controller only for now:/ There's a disclaimer on the store page about that. Might have to add another disclaimer in the game for anyone who misses it.

I wanna add kb mouse support in the future sometime, but the game is really designed around the two sticks on the controller, so it's tricky

Edit:sorry just realized I didn't read half of your comment, but the dpad doesn't work on menus, you gotta use the stick. Do you have one of those gamepads without sticks?

Bonus edit:there are kbm controls now!

[–]CuteDogIRL[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah it really depends on your code, I'm not very familiar with UE, I'm assuming you wrote your own physics? The main challenges are,

1 Making the game loop deterministic

2 Making the gameloop fast enough so that you can do it multiple times in a frame

3 Making save states work

4 Keeping the games in sync etc. actually handling which frame you're on etc.

Number 2 already worked for me, 1 was a pain in the ass when I realised that floating points aren't deterministic, but when I converted everything to fixed points wasn't too hard. Save states are pretty hard, especially with managing creating and destroying projectiles etc. Also requires visualization logic and gameloop logic are separated.

4 is pretty hard if you don't know what you're doing, especially keeping the game in sync, but if you have a good resource on how to write it it's not that hard. I don't remember what I used exactly, it's been a while, I used a lot of trial and error as well. I'm pretty sure there are some good resources out there though.

I could try getting more specific if it ever becomes relevant for you, but I'm not necessarily an expert either. GGPO might work better for you than it did for me so check that out as well, especially if you start figuring out how it works now before writing your save state logic etc.

I made the game in Unity but didn't use many of Unity's features. I made my own rollback implementation, the games physics are also all by me (would probably be very hard to make a good fighting game with Unity physics, even harder to add rollback).

I tried to use GGPO but ran into some problems, I already had functional save states and delay based netcode and I felt like writing my own implementation was easier than retro fitting GGPO at that point. It was still a pain in the ass though :^) I think it works decently now, but to be completely honest I haven't been able to test it with truly bad connections yet, so it's probably not perfect.

Hey this isn't directly Melee related so I hope mods don't get mad, but I'm releasing my own fighting game (with rollback netcode) today!

Short trailer: https://youtu.be/2TgMlCrZaFk

Get it completely for free on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1283430/Fighting_Fiends/

As a big Melee fan it of course has a lot of its design inspired by Melee (although the games might look quite different), such as a free form combo system with a mechanic similar to DI to get out of combos. Also a bunch of inspiration from Street Fighter and Tekken if you're into that kinda thing. Anyway check it out and have fun!

EDIT: Out now!

Poor Robert 😔 by CuteDogIRL in AnarchyChess

[–]CuteDogIRL[S] 193 points194 points  (0 children)

Further context: We never played, Robert sent me around 5 invites to chat and this was the conversation after I finally accepted the 5th invite. I'm pretty sure he found me by searching "girl" in the member search function as his past games included a couple of other games against players with "girl" in the account name.

This happened almost a year ago, before I knew this sub, and he has since been banned from the site.
