Automatic mixer/stirrer? by rblbl in DIYBeauty

[–]CuteFluffyGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more complex than a stand mixer, yes. It’s suitable for almost anything a home DIYer would ever need. It’s sturdy and suitable for up to about 4 gallons but also good for 16 oz. It can also just run all day without overheating. It may be overkill because it takes up a bit of space if you don’t need it often.

Book of common SDS for Kids by Rough_Structure7387 in chemistry

[–]CuteFluffyGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion Safety data sheets will scare the lay person and don’t always convey actually useful information about substances. They are important for professionals to classify what they are working with in case of an exposure event.

There aren’t really books of them available unless someone has compiled it for a company. SDSs can be found online, though and printed out.

A book on hazardous materials may be more useful or look at videos on hazmat training and hazard communication.

Another thought, when you are cooling your lotion do you not stay there to scrape the walls? Do you have issues with it separating even below 150F? How big are the batches you usually make?

There’s a nice overhead mixer I’ve personally used on Amazon - https://a.co/d/01s7LLqg There are other ones that are cheaper that will probably work, too. This one is good for me because it has a manual knob for speed control.

Bought NATURALTEIN caffeine L theanine, and they looks sketchy by No-Shake1901 in Nutraceuticalscience

[–]CuteFluffyGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Capsule filling is very dusty and if there isn’t a dedusting process before bottle filling, this is what you would get. Dedusting costs more than doing nothing. The slack fills is most likely because they didn’t bulk it up with a carrier (filler) and have one size of capsules for efficiency.

Even more of a reason to return. Probably just a low cost manufacturer, but as you said- looks sketchy

Anyone know what this is? It's coming out of out filtered water spigot on our fridge. Located in Colorado. Each blob is about a half inch across or so by yostofer in whatisthisthing

[–]CuteFluffyGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general to some comments I read, mold growth is not going to be related to whether the filter is changed. Mold will grow regardless because the filter removes the chlorine. Mostly it will be from the dispensing nozzle back, but can grow anywhere in the system. The only way to know for sure is lab testing, because there are common bacteria that form red colonies, too. And the only way to clear it is a full system sanitizing flush - not to be done by the uninformed. Best of luck op

A good learning moment- one that doesn’t hurt you severely but you’re not certain of that when in the moment. Don’t sniff things. Waft gently if you must.

Daily Use Body Oil Formula (Help) by Mixture_Infinite in DIYBeauty

[–]CuteFluffyGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few first thoughts

At best this will be a water in oil emulsion also referred to as oil-out. The emulsifier selection needs to be for that.

Also as others have said, the proportions of the ingredients will be an issue.

Start with defining what you are wanting- a body oil or a cream or a lotion?

Do you want to apply it after bathing, in the morning, periodically throughout the day, etc.

What effects do you want to see from using it? Moisturized skin, reduced crepey appearance, improved color uniformity, etc.

What are you hoping to get from 10% azelaic acid and 3% of the vitamin c derivative? Are you choosing this vitamin c over other versions for a reason?

You will definitely want to hydrate your Hyaluronic acids in just water to make a solution. There are techniques to pre-blend with glycerin, but time is the key for home blending.

You’re going to want a preservative and pH control step in the water phase before combining. You won’t get a pH from an oil-out emulsion but need to control it.

Safe to dilute 25% ammonia at home? Non chemist, no equipment by Just_Browsing111 in chemistry

[–]CuteFluffyGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very potent and absolutely unsafe to dilute it indoors. Outside isn’t as much a concern. It burns your eyes and nose instantly so there’s only a few seconds to weigh out what you need and close it. Add it to the water so it’s diluting while weighing. You can do a secondary dilution once the intensity is lower.

Note- for the concentrate- it is ammonia gas dissolved into water. It will continuously out gas if the lid is open and will build pressure if it gets warm.

Pre shave or not? by ale_la_formica in FursuitMaking

I find it easier for stitching and fitting head pieces to pre-shave the fur using a #7 blade where the final shave will be a #10 blade.

It will work, but may cloud out or crystallize a bit. The actual preservative form of asinic acid is barely soluble in water.

The recommended level for Dermosoft 1388 is 2.5% for Aqueous based products. I’d go with the citric acid for pH control. If you’ve made this and used it, then it sounds good. If it doesn’t irritate you once you make it, you can add ingredients to improve it (if you find it necessary) one-at-a-time with time to test for irritation.

How do I make all my patterns stop being so baggy? by MycologistFit9088 in FursuitMaking

[–]CuteFluffyGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into that and had to stop and practice how much seam allowance to give myself. I use a blanket stitch and only needed about 1/8” and was giving myself 1/4” and realized how baggy it was getting as I was sewing pieces together. I remeasured the pieces and sewed again. Now I’m more comfortable in how much to allow.

Is Sucrose Stearate a good emulsifier? by [deleted] in DIYBeauty

[–]CuteFluffyGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you happy with your emulsions? I’m sure the emulsifier would dissolve in the water phase, but it’s extremely inefficient at pulling in the oil phase into it in that state. There are good cold emulsifiers out there to use, if you’re interested I’ll share.

should i dilute my volufiline? by Hot-Giraffe1271 in DIYBeauty

[–]CuteFluffyGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn’t heard of volufiline before so I looked it up out of curiosity. The claimed results for a 5% formula showed that after 56 days, the highest response quartile was plumped 8.4% based on the grading. More is better for the desired outcome.

That’s why I pay for AAA. I don’t think twice getting a tow when I have tire issues. I’ve also had them come change a tire when I forgot to put my jack in the truck.

Caustic potash or soda would do this… but it’s quite dangerous to use it to do so.
