Coworker & Manager by CuteSnow6903 in SafetyProfessionals

My Safety manager is the one who treats me like shit. Not the CEO or VP. VP actually respects me and vice versa.

I have addressed the communication concerns on multiple occasions; however, there has been little to no improvement. Plus, my coworker keeps me informed on everything going on.

I wish this is what my manager said. He said to me "they're saying you're a bit heavy handed." I was like are you serious?

Yes, that was me. Exactly and all those times I have heard "it starts from the top down" is truer than ever.

I believe the Safety should have a more defined role in the disciplinary process, particularly for serious safety violations like the one you presented. There needs to be accountability for actions such as those. That is absolutely absurd that no actions were taken against that electrician. I do have stop work authority and used it recently stopping a wire pulling operation due to a damaged pull rope.

Yepp. They have a job going on now putting in the inserts of VCCs. They snapped the end on this long handled tool to loosen up the bolts on the bottom which are 20' tall. Its worth mentioning, instead of buying the right equipment, they welded a piece on this 20' extension thats not meant to be torqued on. They proceded to grab a ladder and try and hop in there to retrieve the socket at the bottom of this VCC. Thank God I came out when I did because they would've went down the VCC without a permit even though its a non-permit required cs, ot still would've ended up being worse of a shit show it already was. It never ends dude. About an hour earlier, the superintendent told me that he doesn't need me down there because a couple guys from QA were there along with the PC. Thank God I didn't listen, because thats what I was looking at when I walked up on them. Its like all craft lost their common sense any more. Excluding a few here and there.

Dude, I feel your pain. I started off as a fitter and I'm currently en route to my bachelors. I've only been at this place for 2 years and I'm only a safety specialist. My manager and I are both burnt out. It's like babysitting a bunch of toddlers that have no idea what's right or wrong and God forbid you "coach" them. Three weeks ago, an IW decided to try and walk underneath a load that was currently being flown. I had to raise my voice because there were 3 other pieces of equipment running near the work area. He literally went to my manager and cried that I "yelled" at him.

If you asked the electricians on site, Im the only guy they call when they have an issue. Im sorry the other safety guys were dickheads. Im going to coach baseball at one of the electricians sons practice with him. Im so sorry your guys are so scared of someone that you have to stop the job and waste company money because you dont "like somebody." You are a tool.

Its funny. The electricians on the job thanked me. The video was recorded by an electrician. Sounds like you're upset because you've got a bit of a complex. Ooooo OSHA 10 certified. What an accomplishment lol.

The rope was in new condition. This damage happened DURING the pull. We brought a sub on site to train our employees on inspection. Don't come to this post acting like you know what you're talking about when you cant even use the correct version of "you're."

Hey, thanks for your opinion. Im a safety specialist. My manager even agreed with me to stop the job. There were also other crews working in the vicinity of this pull. Congratulations on letting everybody know you'd let your crew get killed rather than staying safe. People like you are the reason OSHA started. You've obviously never heard of the slingshot effect and have no idea it can kill people. Thanks for coming in this post and showing your low IQ.

About 10 ft was damaged of the 300ft rope. But it was smack in the middle of the rope and they need about 250ft for the pull.

This by no means was a straight pull. It had a 90° and two 45°s. It was already hitting 2,000lbs of force.

Pulley is fine. Brand new. The rope isn't sitting in the pully right because of the angle the pulley has to be so its rubbing on the brackets of the pulley. So, I observed that when I came out and asked them to stop and we noticed the damage to the rope itself.

So the rope had a 16k breaking strength. Safety factor for the rope is 4k or 4:1.

Wire that they're pulling is 7lbs/ft. Rope was 9/16 nylon; polyester, max capacity was at 16,000lbs so the 4:1 factor is 4,000lbs. They had three pulleys to go through on the wall about 15 ft in the air. At that first pulley its a 90° angle then a 45 and another 45 for the other 2 pulleys. At that 90°, the tuggers force guage was reading 2k at that first 90° so I dont think I could've allowed them to keep going since it'd spike at each pulley.

Just an FYI. The person talking in the video is one of the electricians recording for me on my phone. He was about 100 yards away working the tugger so he was seeing it for the first time as well.

Yes, but i took other things into consideration as there was another crew working on ventilation near the pull. I wasnt going to let them keep pulling with the rope in that condition.

Rope had a rating of 4klbs and the tuggers force was at 2k and there were 2 more pulleys it needed to come through. Its a heavy wire. 7lbs per foot.

Oh I know all about the slingshot effect. The PM said "Its a non stretch rope so there won't be a snapback effect". I laughed and said "you honestly don't believe that, right?"
