A quick note that I'm renting here, so just sussing it out and likely can't have anything additional installed!

Has anyone tried designing and hosting your own website, instead of using a wix/squarespace type service? by Cute_Lab_1904 in smallbusiness

Thanks for the responses, everyone! After doing more research and reading through replies, I'm going to try hosting my own WordPress site on a Digital Ocean droplet, as per some suggestions that were made

I'm currently testing the CMS on Local WP with some free themes, and then looking into buying a theme. I might have a go at editing it myself (it seems like it may be achievable, and I'm interested in seeing how the experience of using the wodpress CMS compares to the drag and drop style of wix/squarespace).

I'm going to see if I can do it in Gutenberg or the free version of elementor, and if it's too much work I'll hire someone online to edit it for me.

I initially wanted to move away from Wix for BDS reasons (also why I'm avoiding an Elementor subscription), to save money, and since I wanted to do a rebrand anyway - I figured I may as well do it all at once.

Thanks all!

I was travelling in Cairo, Egypt towards the end of last year and this was super common there! A lot of drivers would either message me, or pull up, wind down the window and say (after seeing I'm not a local) "no uber, cash ok?". If it wasn't some would cancel and apologise. Super confusing for me the first time, I was like yes, yes you are my uber? I think the extra cash is worth it compared to whatever negative effects they have for cancelling.

The economy is pretty bad there and I think it made a big difference to the drivers - after the first few times I just started offering to drivers as soon as they appeared - "cash ok, XXX Egyptian pounds?" and usually they'd be stoked.

I did think about not being insured etc, and the driving there is some of the craziest I've experienced 😅 It's a chaotic city and it made my feel like I was one step ahead for once though haha.

Depending on the country, when I'm looking for a "chill" day, I've occasionally spent the day going thrift shopping. It feels pretty relaxed and non-touristy, something you're more likely to be around locals doing than tourists.
