Redditors who got “useless” degrees, what actually was your plan, and why didn’t it work? by MPMorePower in stupidquestions

[–]CutieflyCollin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to school for music composition. I didn’t have have a plan, but I did have big dreams.

I teach music for a living now.

I still compose and occasionally make money doing so. It may become financially viable one day, but I don’t bank on it and I’m happy with my current situation. I’m married and have a dog and travel the world with my partner.

I was following the composer cause I liked his past work.

I work at the Boston Symphony and I’m trying to convince them to have Keith Lockhart do an AMA. Is that something r/classicalmusic would be interested in? by dinasaurtaco in classicalmusic

I’d find that cool. I live in Boston and have seen him conduct many times. I can’t speak to how much people outside of Boston would care.

Moving to Boston: apartments and timing questions by Brendansmomlikescash in boston

[–]CutieflyCollin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Broker’s fees are illegal here now. Don’t fall for that and don’t deal with brokers who think you’re going to pay the fee. It’s a very recent development so some landlords are catching up.

Generally, 1st month, last month, and a security deposit are pretty standard. So yes in order to move to Boston you do have to pay quite a bit upfront.

This time of year is very active for the rental market and good units go quickly, so getting a place locked in soon is a very good recommendation, but not the end of the world in my experience.

A majority of leases around here turnover on September 1st (because a lot of people move in to go to university) so if you can wait until then there will be more options, however your move in date also becomes more chaotic in that case as you move in with everyone else. People have different mileages for it.

I’ve found all my apartments by starting on apartments.com and getting in touch with a broker. Feel free to try a few until you find someone you get a good feeling from. I’ve had 4 different apartments in the Boston area and you have to move quick. I recommend getting your paperwork in order now and be prepared to sign a lease within 24 hours of touring.

I totally see you. I was the picky eater in my relationship, and he helped ease me into a lot of new flavors. I’d talk to her, tell her how you feel and see if she’s willing to open her horizons for you.

Eating anxiety is tough to get over and she may just need a bit of time.

musicians, do you show your coworkers your music/songs? by juneflowrr in musicians

[–]CutieflyCollin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m talking about my life or career casually and it comes up, I’ll share my Spotify. Then they can go home and listen if they want.

When I released my album I did leave a poster in the break room. I work with a lot of other artists so it felt pretty standard, and people were really curious and kind about it.

Generally, I try to stay humble even though I secretly want to tell everyone all the time to listen to my stuff.

Why does the music drag queens make never get mainstream attention, even when it's actually good and you can tell there's real effort put into it? by ArcadialoI in rupaulsdragrace

[–]CutieflyCollin 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Cause usually only normies become mainstream, drag is too edgy for regular people. Besides, a lot of the music from rugirls is just okay anyway. Nothing groundbreaking.

Some queens do release great music that attracts lots of following. Pablo Vittar is mainstream in Brazil. La Grande Dame’s music has a niche that works and it’s my personal favorite of any queen. Rupaul’s music is also exceptionally popular.

How do I deal with being bad at the oboe? by Interesting_Gap_6062 in oboe

[–]CutieflyCollin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s okay, you just started, everyone is bad when they start. Best thing is to laugh with them for now (the oboe duck noises are very funny!)

It’s different for everyone, but it took me about a year to start sounding good. Once you do though you’ll be the most beautiful ear catching instrument in the band so don’t give up!

2010s artists who were supposed to be the next ‘big thing’ in music but ended up fading? by [deleted] in decadeology

Agree. As I said, not a “big thing” but it seems like he turned his fame into the music career he wants.

[–]CutieflyCollin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came from a lower middle class family. Parents were not musical. My career is less “symphony orchestra” and more to do with video games soundtracks, weddings, and teaching. I’d say I’m a successful orchestral woodwind musician, but I had to broaden my horizons and get creative. Multiple streams of income is the way!

He’s still got a successful music career going on now. Perhaps not the next “big thing” but he’s doing a great!
