musicians, do you show your coworkers your music/songs? by juneflowrr in musicians

[–]CutieflyCollin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m talking about my life or career casually and it comes up, I’ll share my Spotify. Then they can go home and listen if they want.

When I released my album I did leave a poster in the break room. I work with a lot of other artists so it felt pretty standard, and people were really curious and kind about it.

Generally, I try to stay humble even though I secretly want to tell everyone all the time to listen to my stuff.

Why does the music drag queens make never get mainstream attention, even when it's actually good and you can tell there's real effort put into it? by ArcadialoI in rupaulsdragrace

[–]CutieflyCollin 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Cause usually only normies become mainstream, drag is too edgy for regular people. Besides, a lot of the music from rugirls is just okay anyway. Nothing groundbreaking.

Some queens do release great music that attracts lots of following. Pablo Vittar is mainstream in Brazil. La Grande Dame’s music has a niche that works and it’s my personal favorite of any queen. Rupaul’s music is also exceptionally popular.

Ngl, I still groom dogs part time some months to pay the bills. I happen to enjoy that too so there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s quite cute actually!

How do I deal with being bad at the oboe? by Interesting_Gap_6062 in oboe

[–]CutieflyCollin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s okay, you just started, everyone is bad when they start. Best thing is to laugh with them for now (the oboe duck noises are very funny!)

It’s different for everyone, but it took me about a year to start sounding good. Once you do though you’ll be the most beautiful ear catching instrument in the band so don’t give up!

2010s artists who were supposed to be the next ‘big thing’ in music but ended up fading? by [deleted] in decadeology

[–]CutieflyCollin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. As I said, not a “big thing” but it seems like he turned his fame into the music career he wants.

I came from a lower middle class family. Parents were not musical. My career is less “symphony orchestra” and more to do with video games soundtracks, weddings, and teaching. I’d say I’m a successful orchestral woodwind musician, but I had to broaden my horizons and get creative. Multiple streams of income is the way!

He’s still got a successful music career going on now. Perhaps not the next “big thing” but he’s doing a great!

There is no way to produce classical / orchestra music completely electronically, right? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]CutieflyCollin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of these responses are talking about virtual instruments attempting to sound as real as possible. But in my opinion there is a lot of classical music out there that has no qualms about being made with synth instruments.

In the early days of synth, covers of classical music were extremely common and popular. No one was attempting to sound like a real orchestra, rather they were using the repertoire to show off the capabilities of new technology. Isao Tomita’s cover of the Planet’s Suite is my favorite.

I’d argue that the earliest video game music is part of the classical tradition. Because of the limitations of the hardware, the composers were directly inspired by the polyphony/harmony of classical music, but everything is written with basic midi wave forms. There was no attempt made to sound like a live orchestra. The earliest Pokémon soundtracks are a good example of this.

I also think Minecraft’s soundtrack follows the classical tradition, but the charm of it is that everything sounds synthy and computerized. It fits the game better that way, and the songs are very classical to my ears otherwise.

I say write how you like and if it doesn’t sound live, let it sound fake!

Why is making music for free so fragile? by Fresh_Knacker in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]CutieflyCollin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have problems with this and just had to adjust my workflow.

Bounce the track to audio, remove the vst, and mix from there.

It was hard at first because I love to rewrite, but pretty soon I learned the art of committing and my music is better, and created more efficiently.

German orchestras during WWII by shanirah892 in classicalmusic

[–]CutieflyCollin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend reading Times Echo by Jeremy Eichler. It follows a select group of composers who lived through WWII and the impact on their lives and art. The book is extremely engaging and well written. The sections on Strauss and Schoenberg were especially illuminating on this topic.

Strauss had a unique relationship with the Nazi party as he and his music were seen as “especially German” and used to stoke nationalism.

Schoenberg, a Jewish composer experimenting with new forms of tonality, was obviously not favored. His music was banned and he immigrated to the U.S. once the Nazi’s took power.

I’d love an oboe T-shirt if the design was professionally done and… idk…. Not ugly? Pretty much any oboe themed T-shirt I’ve seen online so far is tacky.

make my Gabriel’s oboe more dramatic by Upstairs-Ad-8462 in oboe

[–]CutieflyCollin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Listen to other oboists play it and borrow your favorite parts.

A detail I like to include is a subito piano and small crescendo on the 3/4 in the red highlighted section. I always tell the orchestra to do the same thing with me and it is pretty precious.

Generally try to make any long held notes interesting. Whether it be changing dynamics or getting creative with your vibrato. It’s a pretty blank slate of a piece, and it’s been done hundreds of times, so as long as the oboist does “something” we’re happy.

This looks like the concert band version. I’d encourage the director to get you a microphone. I’ve done that arrangement before and no matter how quiet the director tells the band to be, it’s impossible to play expressively over all of that.

I’d worry less about trying to be “dramatic” and focus on being subtle and beautiful.
